hey i just finished creating this simple mesh by combining three vanilla armor pieces a full body mesh bone structure. everything looks in place, but when i equip the item in game, the mesh is distorted and spiky. i have no idea what to do here and spent the last five hours trying to work around this. so what i'm asking is if someone could take a look at my .nif file and help me troubleshoot.

here's a download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?5xblqmwjd2f4o52

I've just took a look at your nif in 3ds max. You have a skin modifier on your mesh but there is no weight whatsoever. I imported a skeleton and an upperbody as well, seperately.

When I moved the bones the upperbody moved with it but your mesh stayed in the same place.

What you need to do is weight your mesh to specific bones but I lack the knowledge to help you further. I haven't even scratched the surface of that subject yet I'm afraid.
