A question on Curie

On my first playthrough I dumped Curie as I found her a bit boring but on my second I have kept her enough to romance her. Something which happens around her is strange though.

The first time was at Saugus Ironworks, when a firefight erupted between some caravan guards and the Forged. I accidentally shot at a female guard with grey hair and Curie started shooting at me, then a window opened "Send Curie to - list of settlements". I loaded a previous save and the same thing happened again. And a third. Fourth time I just walked away.

Last night the same caravan guard was being attacked by a mongrel and I went over to help, shot it through the head and the guard opened fire on me ! Curie didn't shoot but again I was asked to send her to a settlement.

What's this all about ?

It's not just Curie. Pretty sure almost all companions get a very rapid affinity drop and will very likely turn outright hostile if you murderize civilians. Seen it happen with Nick, Deacon, and Cait too.

The "send to" dialog happens in any case when their affinity dropped low enough that they refuse to follow you any more. And if they turn hostile, well, you're already a bit past that point.

All the more reason to stick to Ada, if you ask me. She has absolutely no moral compass. You know, if the massive firepower wasn't reason enough

Well, that or check your fire, and avoid area of effect weapons. That includes explosive weapons like missile launchers, Spray And Pray, grenades, flamethrowers, explosive minigun on robots, etc.

Also, avoid stealing when civilians are around. That includes Covenant: clear it all BEFORE you plant a settlement beacon mast. Companions tend to intervene on your side in the firefight, kill someone, then get pissed off at you for that kill.

And better not have Ricochet when you go stealing, for the same reason.

Note though that this doesn't include hostiles like the settlers in Covenant if you pick the hostile quest ending, or the Triggermen in the Goodneighbor warehouses, or such.

Thanks for your reply. However in the second case with the mongrel I was very careful to target it and and use a Gauss rifle so there was no chance of the guard being hit. In future I will just let her die.

Another bizarre thing happened at Croup Manor - it was strafed by a Vertibird and my 15 settlers went chasing it. I have given 2 of them miniguns and the rest high powered laser rifles and they are all in full combat armour so it turned into a hell of a fight until the vertibird was brought down. One settler was injured but when she recovered Curie started chasing her and shooting her, yelling robot sounding stuff like "termination protocol initiated!". The settler would run off screaming and Curie would nearly kill her then she would start looking for her again. It was pretty entertaining !

Well, by the sound of it (miniguns, gauss and high powered rifles) I forgot to mention that missing or overpenetration can be all kinds of problems too. Especially anything .308 or 5.56 can and will hit stuff behind the target.

But yeah, sometimes it doesn't pay to play good Samaritan. The merchant is protected anyway, so it's often safer to just let them fight it out.

Or, again, just stick to Ada. I'm serious about that girl having no moral compass. I can link you to a video of someone murderizing the whole Goodneighbour with Ada, and her only comments are along the lines of "Where did they go?" or "Better not leave anything useful behind."

ummmm....

I went to Goodneighbor with Mac Cready as my companion.

I gave him the ASH minigun and a big bucket-load of ammo.

I went into that hotel.

I went up towards the room that I sleep in.

I went and stole a coffee cup.

I immediately get blasted on my backside by Mac Cready!!!

I get blasted by my companion for stealing a coffee cup???

WTF???
