Mods folder

First time I installed a mod, it went into the CookedPC/Abilities folder. "geralt_basic.xml". As I've tried other mods, they have the same file name and simply overwrite this same file. thus it seems none are compatible with each other. Or maybe some are? (I know god-mode and inventory are not)

Anyway my question is, the game never had a file by that name in that folder to begin with? (I never checked - foolish).

I've tried running the game with that Abilities folder empty and it seems fine,

you can extract the file but originally not in CookedPC. CookedPC file is like somekind of Overriding file that the game's loading priority gave to it. If it is empty then the game will return to load default settings stored by normal installation.

The game reads unpacked dzip files first and if none exist then reverts to the normally installed dzip files . Which is why when you try to update with a patch and unpacked dzip files are in the CookedPC folder you get the installed game version is incomplete or invalid argument .
