Is the GeForce GT 220 good?

Recommended Posts

So recently my grandpa has given me his GeForce GT 220 and I was wondering what frame rate I could get with my specs, I was hoping I could play Skyrim or even Fallout 4 on my PC.

Memory: 8 GB

Cpu: Intel® Core i3-4130 @ 3.40GHz

Gpu: GeForce GT 220

If there is anymore information I need to list please let me know.

No. The GT220 is very bad.

It's actually worse than the iGPU built into your CPU: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2643&cmp[]=72

Given your 8GB of presumably dual-channel RAM, not even the advantage of not sharing system RAM with the card will help the GT220. Basically the only use for the GT220 would be if you needed multiple displays.

that card is from 2009, and is essentially ancient by today's standards. You will not be able to run either of those well, or likely even at all. While you may be able to run Skyrim, the graphics would have to be set very low.

Fallout 4 is a no, and you will most likely be unable to even start the game.

Strange, well regarding Skyrim, I've played the game when it ran off of just the mother board and it got 17-26 to even 35 frames.

Actually it's not the video card's age that is the problem, it's that it was very low-end back in 2009.

A GTX 280 or a Radeon HD 4870, both from 2008, can run Skyrim with flying colors, provided one doesn't go crazy with mods.

Good news is, you can run Skyrim on an integrated GPU. I have (you kinda have to if you're traveling with laptops) and it can be set up to run pretty reasonably. Shouldn't come as a surprise - the Xbox 360, which Skyrim was designed for, has a GPU from 2005.

Hmm well I'm new to computers as I've mainly played the Fallout/Elder Scrolls series on the good Ol' xbox, so your help is much appreciated!

Just played Fallout New Vegas on Medium settings and got silky smooth 60 fps, so Im content, though you were correct, Skyrim ran at 18-25 frames, also Minecraft (Yes Minecraft) Went from 30FPS to always being 69FPS

GT220 isn't great for games, but it probably was never really marketed for such - would work very nicely in an HTPC or non-gaming system though, and it will support video decoding for basically everything (e.g. h.264, Flash, VC-1, etc), and may even have HDMI out (probably depends on the board vendor there). I'd say its probably not the bestest choice if you're after Fallout 4, but would be worth keeping around as a spare PCIe card, or if you have an HTPC or non-gaming system or whatever that has an even older card (especially if that card doesn't have as complete video decoding) it'd probably make a fine upgrade.
