It's been 7 months and I have a couple hundred hours in this game, but I'm just not interested in modding it like I was with other titles. I had a lot of fun modding Morrowind and even more with New Vegas. I've been putting some time in tweaking the new survival, and a few ideas have come to mind.

I thought it would be a cool thing to turn the power armor furniture into a camp site. So every time you got out of it you would have a camp site to store stuff or sleep, and it would pack itself up when you got into it. I gave up on it though while starring at it in nifskope. The problem I think is I might be loosing interest in the game already.

It's still early to be doing anything major anyway I know that, especially with the new survival mode. It's pretty bad as it is and I'm sure updates will keep changing it. Maybe Far Harbor will motivate me more I don't know. Really though, I don't see myself spending as much time with this release.

Whats everyone else think, working on any grand idea's, or long term goals? Or maybe you gave up on something like I did.

Fallout 4 vanilla shows its cynical origins, and just isn't a very compelling game. But it is an amazing sandbox if only the right types of over-haul mods can appear in time. And there lies the problem.

Early mods do a lot to enhance settlement building, but have yet to give a purpose to settlements or to improve the hopeless settler AI to any great degree. But if one has no interest in settlement building- these types of mods are a write-off anyway.

And 'survival mode'- I just cannot fathom the point in the vanilla game at all- just adds TORTURE to a game that already has enough issues already.

I think people who quickly tired of FO4, when they loved earlier Beth games, need to let FO4 go for at least 12-18 months - and then check back fresh to see if mods in the meantime have managed to pretty much replace the vanilla experience.

With beth.net injecting so much poison into the modding scene at the mo, it's going to be a rocky and possibly unpleasant time until things get sorted out anyway.

I'm not optimistic, tho- I think heavy-weight modders will give up on FO4 in short order - and projects as wonderful as iNPC for Skyrim will never appear for this game. There's just too little 'game' to work with in the vanilla release- and Beth's handling of the 'criminal' factions is just plain, well CRIMINAL.

Perversely the 'settlement building' option in the game means that mods introducing major geographic changes would clash with potential in-game user constructions- and this is conceptually awkward.

Beth forgot (on purpose, for cost reasons) to make FO4 a living breathing world- choosing instead to focus on poorly motivated constant battle scenarios across the map. And wherever you go, examples of one violent faction always seem to exist right next to another- no defined regions at all.

So much potential- but so much complex work for modders to do, and so little reason for them to bother this time. And to add insult to injury, Beth is constantly changing the modding rules- making keeping the game up to date AND running with previously installed mods far more of a worry than it should be.

Well I hadn't played it in I don't know how long because I picked up Witcher 3 and was absorbed by it. Then one of my mods for that game broke and now I can't play it, so while that's being sorted out I decided to try the new survival mode. So far I'm really liking it a lot, even the things I thought would bother the crap out of me like the save feature aren't too bad. I did get a mod that unlocked the console and I use my usual mods. I can see how some would see the additions as annoyances instead of challenge, but that's the nature of survival. I still think it's too easy, I'm level 12 and I'm one shot sneak killing everything I come across, and I don't even have any weapon/damage perks yet or legendary weapons. Because I play a stealth/ranged play style I almost never take damage either. So, I get hungry and I get thirsty and if I take chems I may get some infections or something, and I have to plan my saves and my exploring a little smarter than I used to.

I remember when I noticed this, wasn't even that far in the game. None of the factions have any relevance, and choice practically does't exist. All outcomes are the same. It immensely takes away from replay, and I would say the same with the sandbox side of it as well. How many times can you explore a sandbox? It clearly wasn't developed for that, because there are no other means to get around besides walking (new survival). Already its too heavily dependent on mods for replay value.

I wish I could say "all I have to do is add a few lines of dialogue and some quests, and that will fix it". Its not as easy as that though, and trying to make choice matter shouldn't be a modders job. It's very linear and it's very hard to work around that. I'll have to wait and see what others come up with and do for now. I don't think your exaggerating at all when you say come back after 12 months either, unfortunately.

I'ts a recent update, and their most likely going to put out multiple updates to change it. I am curious to see what their plans are for difficulty. I'm sure it's not gonna stay the same high burst damage with bullet sponges that it is now.

I'd like to see all weapons on both sides do more damage. The most fun I've had so far was running into a certain named raider who carries a minigun...and I forgot that I use a minigun mod that ups the fire rate and damage quite a bit, so even with power armor on when I rounded the corner and she opened fire I got mowed down exactly like you would expect if you really got shot up with a minigun. It took about 4 tries before I finally got the jump on her and it forced me to play the game differently, and that felt pretty good. I'm sure if I were the run and gun type player this game would be much more challenging, but to me that play style is just too reckless and wasteful of ammo and resources.
