A question about some mods

So i must be quite the blind guy, because i seem to always miss that part of the readme.

So last mod i realised that some Mod crashes i have been having were because of me not properly using the mod's .ini file.

Here is my question, what do i do with the .ini file.

Example: I downloaded smite of the order, i configured the variables and copied it to my DATA file inside oblivion, yet ingame it says the shaders are not yet configured. So i chose other variables. Same deal.

Question : What do i do with the .ini files some mods have? Do i copy them somewhere specific or do i do something like copying the variables to Oblivion.ini?

Thank you very much Nexus!

Different mods are going to require the .ini to be placed into a different folder. The general rule of thumb is to use any preexisting file structure in the archive for the mod in question. If the modder has it packed into just \Data leave the .ini in \Data if he has it in "\Data\INIs\blahblah\config" leave it in "\Data\INIs\blahblah\config". In some special cases, often where mods have a large number of options, there may be explicit instructions as to where you should be placing any .ini's for that mod in the mods installation instructions found in the readme. If a mod doesn't have a readme, that may reflect on the quality of the mod in general.

You may or may not want to make backups of some of the .ini's to ensure you have the default settings to fall back on if you can't figure out exactly what setting is causing an issue. This can be done in a number of different ways, though I suggest copying them in their original folder and renaming them to something along the lines of "dummyini.ini.bak". Changing the suffix changes what type of file it is therefore ensuring it won't interfere with anything, while leaving them in there original folder, and not changing the name to say "Backup of dummyini.ini" helps to avoid confusion if you ever do need to restore the default settings of the mod in question.

To alter the settings for a mod you simply open the .ini in a text editor of your choice (MS Word etc. are not recommended as they may input formatting and such without you even knowing about it. Notepad or Wordpad are fine) modify the values you'd like to change, and save the file keeping the original name and suffix.
