Post-Apocalyptic Cyrodiil

Quite new to the forums, as you can see, but bear with me a little.

I've a little modding experience, though I haven't released any of my mods. Mainly I've done a little editing of mods other people have made, made a couple weapons with scripts, and renovated/fixed up certain Companion mods. Naturally I figured that the time has come for me to try my own hand at making a mod from scratch.

Anyway, getting to the point, I have an idea for a Quest/landscape overhaul mod- the title says it all. I was just wondering how many people would be interested with a storyline involving a post-apocalyptic Cyrodiil, or even going so far as to help in creating such a mod.

Yes, I do realize that there is a Fallout series that caters to the "post-apocalyptic" crowd, but I consider that sci-fi. We're talking a post-apocalyptic setting in a fantasy world, which I don't believe has been done by anyone before (I hope).

So yes, Contriboot your thoughts!

Current Possibilities with the Storyline (Routes) so far.

-Plague-pocalyse: highly contagious plague/disease spreads throughout Cyrodiil

-End Of Civilization: The lack of an Emperor leads many counties to attempting an ill-planned revolt, which quickly goes wrong.

Possibly the aftermath of a plague that decimated the population. Cities and villages mostly in ruins. Ships rotted at the docks. Rats & other creatures overrunning the remnants of towns. Food in short supply. Skeletons and zombies running rampant.

@Ben: Yes, that is one of the possibilities- I've already ruled out the "Apocalypse by invasion" route because you obviously put an end to the Oblivion Gate Crisis in the Main Quest.

I think the other possibility might be "collapse of order", where riots begin because of the lack of an Emperor. If this route is picked, I can come up with a storyline that could possibly connect leading into Skyrim.

I have an idea. But it does kindof go in against all previous ideas...

Do you know Left4Dead?

How about making a (small) sandbox version of that?

ch`yeah L4D, I was sort of contemplating on taking the "zombie apocalypse" path, but looking around Google and Nexus led me to realize just how many zombie apocalypse Mods there are out there. There's also a Zombie sandbox thread going around in this same exact "Mod Request" section right now, so I decided against it and decided I would try and do something out of the norm. I could try fitting a "zombie sandbox" feature into the storyboard, but it's unlikely that I'll choose to make it the basis of the mod.

I think a couple of people have made mods where the Oblivion crisis is the end of civilization and the daedra destroy Cyrodiil. You could use that theme.

I played an alt start mod once where the orcs are evil like in Lord of the Rings or Warcraft I and Warcraft II. They are attacking and overrunning Cyrodiil. Something like that might work for you.

Read up a little on the lore 200 years after Oblivion: something about the new emperor marching into Imperial City and just taking it over with a coup de`tat? They mention something about the other counties reverting back to villages and townships. Maybe I could slip the storyline in there and do something based on that. I could use the daedra overruning Cyrodiil theme, but I'd rather come up with something original if possible.

Do you still remember the names of the mods you've mentioned so I could try playing them for reference? Or just names of the creators would help too.

How about a good ol' fashioned drought, combined with the lack of an emperor would cause widespread famine and descent into anarchy. It would actually explain all the abandoned forts and bandits everywhere. "What is the sun? Magnus is the sun, the largest hole in Oblivion, and the gateway to magic." says The Imperial Library. So maybe something causes the tear to enlarge, causing a hotter, drier Nirn. ( A wizard did it! :P )

You could make it in modular stages, starting off making the landscape and plants dry and dusty (texture replacement ). Then make the trees appear dying as the drought worsens, adding dust storms (tree and weather mod). Dust inundates the cities and they are slowly abandoned and fall into disrepair (city overhaul). Then you could lower the water levels in Cyrodiil exposing dry, sandy lake beds and add new dungeons which were previously flooded (dry shipwrecks!).

Most of the people would move to better places or perish, and those left would need to protect themselves from the sun ( NPC, clothing/armor mod, maybe sun damage & hydration mod? ). I would think Khajiit and Argonians would be the best suited to this landscape, being from a hot province or having reptilian physiology.

The story could center on the widening of Magnus causing not only drought, but also a jump in magical technology. So in classic save-the-world fashion, the hero has to figure out how to return Magnus to normal before everyone toasts, while users of the new technology try to stop them. Or the hero could help the techo-folks find a different solution, or just hog all the technology and watch everyone else starve.

Went a little nuts with ideas there, sorry. :teehee:

  • 3 weeks later...

and what about a natural Apocalypse, like an astroid hitting Nirn, which causes a global catastrophe, and in the end all plant and animal life die out... leaving only humans (and humanoids) alive...

in time Bandits and other hostile groups of people would go roam about searching for food and drinkable water, there could be cannibalism and stuff

I watched The Road a while back, the filmed version (with Viggo Mortensen :D) of the book by Cormac McCarthy.... so I've got the idea from that... :P
