pincus
You know what else you can't do anything about as Archmage? Put the freakin' fire out in the Bruma guild hall! hehe Being Archmage is also worthless. Hardly any of the other mages see you as the Archmage, they need to pay for their disrespect! muhahahahahahaha

Hardly any of the other mages see you as the Archmage, they need to pay for their disrespect! muhahahahahahaha  Hah, true, they really don't acknowledge your rank. In fact, the battlemages in the Arcane University are downright hostile to me. "Make it quick." Makes me want to pull out a conjured claymore and start slicing. Then again, if you consider the Archmage from Morrowind...maybe they just don't have faith in you. The Archmage of Vvardenfell is "quirky" to put it lightly. The quest he hands you is "find out what happened to the dwarves." It's a mystery that's plagued scholars for countless years, and he wants you to solve it right there and now. And he doesn't give you a clue where to start. Funnily enough, the quest is actually doable if you're really savvy (or use a strategy guide)... But still, it's like nobody even recognizes that Traven is dead. You never even get to see the Council, whoever they are. Overall, it feels like that Arcane University is seriously lacking in both size and player interaction.
Naktis
You never even get to see the Council, whoever they are. The Council of Mages is or rather was: Arch-Mage Traven, Caranya, Irlav Jarol and Raminus Polus. Edit: Added the spoiler thing. I expected there to be an entire Congress-esque council in the background story, plus a meeting room of some sort...not just a small clique of old people guiding what barely counts as a university. eric31415
I also like the idea of becoming emperor, and have a good idea for the storyline... After the people become aware of the death of Martin Septim, and the end of the Septim line, the empire falls into dissaray. A new dynasty is needed. Without a strong leader the empire will surely crumble into warring city-states and provinces. The divines speak to you in a vision, telling you that if you can unite the people they will grant you the power to light the dragonfires. You need to travel the land, earning the respect and backing of all the counts/countesses (this is where your fame can come into play), and perhaps defeating an evil counsellor who it also vying for the job. After becoming emperor you need not give up your love of combat (there was a Roman emperor who regularly competed in the gladiatorial arena), but now you have the option of bringing some of the palace guard along with you. As another option: You could give your support to one of the counts/countesses to put them on the throne, travelling around to gain support for them. I think Count Hassildor of Skingrad would be a hilarious choice, and would open up some great storylines, as only you would know his true nature.
