Loads once to never load again

Recommended Posts

Alright so I have reached a point of extreme frustration with this game. The first time I load up a game with all my mods installed, the game runs BEAUTIFULLY. Frame rate is great, the game looks great, and load times are minimal. Then, when I come back to try and play there is disaster. The menu screens load with no problem, but when I try to load a save or start a new game I go to the desktop. I can hear the sound playing, but the video just will not display. Same load order as before, nothing changed except I entered the game world for a few minutes, then exit. I just don't understand at all what is going on. If I dump all the mods and restart, it will load, if I turn back on all the mods, it will load. But just once, then it goes back to crashing to the desktop. I have tried using FNVEdit to check for any terrible conflicts and as far as I can tell there are not any. Well, here's my load order. Please let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions.

If what Rev. said doesn't work, your situation sounds very similar to what happened to me when I first started playing NV.

What I did to fix it was I went in to the options and turned down all my graphics settings to minimal, then I started bumping them up bit by bit starting with the ones I wanted most (like distances in particular). You have some mods though for fx that may require certain minimums, I don't run with any of those mods so I was OK to start from absolute minimum graphics settings and push them up bit by bit to get something I could live with.

I had help with specific settings from some folks at Emma's site but IIRC I turned off a lot of the fancy features like fog and water and left those at minimum. The main thing for me was line of sight distances, I got them all to maximum which I wanted. And I did manage to tweak up some of the textures from low to medium and even enable HDR so the lights look nicer than without it.

Eventually I did get a setting I can live with that is stable and the game plays fine, and it looks OK.

A real pain to configure though because the game doesn't seem to do much in the way of detecting performance and features of individual video cards and giving you a safe but decent working setting.
