Hard Drive Clicking while in-game

Recommended Posts

Does anyone besides me have this? When I play Fallout New Vegas, and ONLY when I play Fallout New Vegas, my hard drive will start to click and the game lags every now and then because of it, as if it's struggling. It's only recently started doing this after I bought Old World Blues. Not sure if that would cause it though. Haven't even been to any of the DLC locations yet. :X

Its sound like the game accessing bad sector area on your hard drive which is filled with new vegas game files...Do check your drive for both fix files system for errors and scan for and attempt recovery bad sectors..If there is no bad sectors then maybe you should try to reinstall the games...

The clicking could be a sign that the HD is about to fail. But as it only seems to occur on NV, it could be Hard drive thrashing, which means it is spending a lot of time reading and writing to the HD while you are playing. Could also be the cause of the lag.

Causes could be; low ram - get more ram. Not enough space on the HD - take out the trash. Fragmented HD, defrag it. Slow HD common with laptops that use a 5400 RPM HD to save some battery life (most desk tops use a 7200 RPM and a fast HD will be 10,000 RPM)

A quick fix could be to disable the Antivirus function that checks for a virus on every read and every write - most AV progs have a setting that will allow this for an individual file or folder leaving the check in place for everything else.

Other recommendations are - Run a Antivirus/anti spyware scan.

If you have Win7, use a flash drive for 'ready boost'.

Here is a site that may help with speeding up Win7

And a very good one that works with any OS. - Note: Not just for GeForce boards.

Thanks for the help all. My hard drive isn't dying, it's brand new. It appears that my game must've had some files corrupted or got installed on a bad sector. Did an integrity search and pulled out most of the suggestions given here. Works fine now, except for when I put on Great Khan armor. :/ Though, I don't really wear it, so I don't really care. :) Thanks all!
