Best way to merge mods?

So I'm using FNVPlugin to merge some mods due to having hit the "brick wall of too many mods". I wanted to do three main ones - a weapons one, an armor one, and a "tweaks" one. I have a few questions before I go further...

 

1.) Will I be able to "update" mods through this method easily? Say, for instance, I'm talking about AG's Supplementary Uniques (which I do use). If she comes out with a new version, am I safe just merging it with my compilation patch? Or will I have to re-build it from scratch?

 

2.) Is there any possible way I can make a merged patch and keep the items I merged it from? Like the aforementioned Supplementary Uniques - is there a way I can merge it where I won't have to find everything all over again?

 

3.) Are there any mods I really should not merge? I noticed CASM doesn't like to be merged, so I'm not mergin' it in. My current load list will be as follows (in spoilers) followed by my old one (also in spoilers) - if anyone wants to tell me what I can/cannot do, I'd be hugely appreciative :D

I would probably try merging simple things like clothing/weapon/armor addon mods and copy all the esp's into a windows folder for each group before merging that way if there are updates you can just add the new esp to the folder copy the esp's back to your FNV directory then create a new merged patch.

Mesh & Textures aren't in the merge so can be just upgraded easily in the FNV folder although I would make a copy of the whole Data folder occasionally to be safe.

I would avoid merging mods that get updated frequently.

This is my theory only as I haven't actually merged any mods yet myself :)

I would probably try merging simple things like clothing/weapon/armor addon mods and copy all the esp's into a windows folder for each group before merging that way if there are updates you can just add the new esp to the folder copy the esp's back to your FNV directory then create a new merged patch.

Mesh & Textures aren't in the merge so can be just upgraded easily in the FNV folder although I would make a copy of the whole Data folder occasionally to be safe.

I would avoid merging mods that get updated frequently.

This is my theory only as I haven't actually merged any mods yet myself :)

Ok now I have merged a few of my own, I basically created merged patches for "Formal Clothing", "Wasteland Clothing" & "Power Armor" this works reasonably well in FNVEdit using the "copy as new record" feature. Where it gets messy is the FormLists for the Armor Addons like Gloves etc. Also you may need to copy (Object Effects if there are any) over although I created new Object effects shared across all the things like Lingere etc so all the similar items used a common effect. I simply renamed an existing mod with a box in a place I liked to "Clothing" then copied all my other clothing items into that mod and then dragged those new items into the existing box. Before opening FNVEdit change your load order so the mod you are copying into is after all the mods you want to copy into it.

It will ask you at times if you want it to become dependant on the original esp. And temporaily you have to say yes. If you then look in FNVEdit you will see on an armor item you click the ogject effect and then if you have copied the effect over as a new record you can swap it from the original mods effect to the new mods effect ID, so the original mod effect might be something like 5A046B and the copy of it in the new mod might be 6D046B.

DON"T try to edit the FormLists in FNVEdit, it will crash and you will have to start again, unfortunately you have to then open the mod in Geck to change the items in the formlist to the new Armor Addons. When you have removes all the Objct Effect & Form List links to the original mod it should be no longer reliant on the original mod file and you can delete it.

The meshes & Textures don't need to be changed the new mod just grabs them from the same place the original did.

Avoid merging mods that have quests or anything else complicated unless you just want the clothing items.

This of course can also be done with Weapons too.

Above all before you start doing this make a complete backup copy of your Fallout New Vegas folder somewhere on your hard drive, because you will screw it up sooner or later and it will save you a 7 hour download.

Q: If you use Wrye Flash, won't the mods merged in the patch be automatically deactivated, reducing the number of active mods without many problems? However i don't know how good Wrye Flash is anymore or if it's still usable.

 

Wrye flash works great. Yes it does deactivate merged mods.
