devinpatterson
Tribals pg 1; devinpattersonMsg ID: 117172 For version 1.x So the whole siding with the poor downtrodden tribals against the predatory mainframe seems like a no brainer for the hero type. How about we introduce some of that moral ambiguity that fallout is famous for? In the beginning when there were a lot of people but limited food/resources people may have been forced to eat other humans. This cannibalism may have been handed down through the generations (figure we''ve got 4 or 5 generations in isolation here). The cannibalism would still be kept under wraps/hidden, but there could be subtle clues if the player looks for it. The player wouldn''t initially be in any danger since he is seen as a miraculous event, arriving at the grate alive when no one else had ever returned from that direction. But later depending on dialog options and choices it could possibly come into play that some of the tribals may want a snack. Having food along, showing the players combat prowess or playing along as the "legendary liberator" would would all be ways to prevent a confrontation over being eaten. devinpatterson
Tribals pg 2; devinpattersonMsg ID: 117182 Well I wouldn't suggest anything along satanic rituals as the tribals are not all evil. Some are evil, some are good, most are more or less neutral in their morals and outlook and simply trying to survive. Being sort of dim bulbs, they don't have a lot of time or inclination for self reflection. The cannibalism arose more out of necessity in the early years and would be handed down partly for survival and partly because being inbred with a small gene pool can amplify genetic behavioral disorders. But the cannibalism isn't practiced openly, most of the tribals have shame/reservations about it and don't discuss it. Some are mentally ill (the harsh conditions, and inbreeding don't help) and are much less bothered by it. We want their religion, such as it is (and to what ever extant they have any) to relate to the mainframe. Which is understandable since the mainframe will be smarter than anyone in the valley (except for the tribals chosen one and possibly the courier) and have superior technical knowledge, it would seem like a god. The mainframe would be seen as a dark god in general (harsh) but also a provider. Some will see themselves serving it (fearfully), others await a prophecy of killing the mainframe and opening a way to the promised land (a parable for escaping the valley, but also applying to the rich hunting grounds in the north of the valley). The prophecy of a chosen one to lead them would probably figure prominently (as every religion seems to have a chosen one) in their belief, whether it is one of their own as messiah or an outsider). Their religious beliefs would be based on the viewpoints the original customers had. Some wanted to make peace with the mainframe as the only technological resource in the valley, some wanted to kill the mainframe for the initial massacre. Many just wanted out. These opinions would become beliefs as the generations passed and would be distorted by the decades, superstitions and general woo. But the religion may be fun to include because it could set up some interesting (minor) plotlines before the player reaches the park proper. For instance a few of the tribals are fearful of angering the mainframe and decide to take the courier in the night and deliver him/her to the mainframe. If the courier doesn't fight them off he/she could end up stripped at the parks front gate. So we can still get the cultish behavior and story lines, but using the mainframe as the focus instead of a satanic plot line.In Reply To: TrooperScooperMKII (117175) Posted On: 3/25/2011 3:16 PM Reply Edit DeleteTrooperScooperMKIIMsg ID: 117181 The last one is win.In Reply To: (117179) Posted On: 3/25/2011 3:07 PM Reply Edit Delete Msg ID: 117179 But what kind of ritual? -selection -consumption -sacrificial-everyon takes homemade hallucinogens, starts to dance around a fire, they bash 2 selected tribals heads in, with some sacred weapon, and all proceed to rip and tear the 2 still twitching bodys apart. So actually any reason will work if someone has a better idea on how to get radiation into the tribe while still staying canon (mojave wasn't hit to0 hard, so it doesn't have a lot of radiation like DC). (my personal favorite) No you wouldn`t want to do that, we would loose any sympathy the player would have for the tribe. Most people would be disinclined to help the tribals, and we would loose a major part of our questline. We want the player to *want* to help them, but not pretend they are perfect little innocent angels. Since they are a little on the stupid side and have had the sh*t kicked out of them that should instill a sense of purpose for the player to help them.In Reply To: TrooperScooperMKII (117178) Posted On: 3/25/2011 4:03 PM Reply Edit DeleteTrooperScooperMKIIMsg ID: 117185 Yeah, sorry for not being clear. I meant rituals that are harsh/barbaric/repulsive to western eyes. So, yeah, that works for me. Besides, we could always have the ritual's followers be a sect within the tribals going off to some other location & doing their thing. WHich would make for an intriguing dilemma- the official tribe policy could be death to cannibals, but it would rarely be actively enforced- the pro-cannibalism and anti-cannibalism factions could be close enough in size to make any open conflict/hostility lethal to the group as a whole, so the anti cannibals (who are the majority among the leaders & tend to be more competent/intelligent in general) don't do anything unless the cannibals are dumb enough to get caught in the open. In turn, the cannibals hide most of their more extreme acts from the group as a whole, so most of the tribals are unaaware of the extent of the ritual's carnage levels. So, the Corurier can either join t4eh group (cannibal perk) ignore the group, threaten the group (try to reform them? pribably wouldn't end well, but the more naive goody-two-shoes types should be able to try) or go running to the chief and tell everything, possibly sparking a civil war, or, if the PC persuades the chief otherwise, merely have a few individuals disappear. This could be an independent quest, i.e. something the PC stumbles across, or a questline done at the behest of BIll or the mainframe to destroy the tribals for good.In Reply To: devinpatterson (117182) Posted On: 3/25/2011 3:30 PM Reply Edit DeletedevinpattersonMsg ID: 117184 Oh we also need to decide how many tribals we have and flesh out their culture. Not every one of them need to be detailed, but more tribals is still more work. Yet I'd like enough that if the player chooses they could be led into battle against the park and be of some aid or at least a distraction. Their population may be constrained by how large we make the valley/canyon. The LOD (level of detail) crap may really limit the valley size, unless we make it twist and turn like crazy. The line of sight is probably around a half cell or less. I was thinking their culture could be kind of like the children in the beginning of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The kids spoke in a stylized english and were prone to mysticism/superstition. The tribals wouldn't be all children, but mentally that would be about their cognitive level. Partly because of the inbreeding, but partly because the mainframe has been culling the smarter ones and that leaves the duller knives making young'nsIn Reply To: devinpatterson (117182)

But spent over an hour trying to line everything up. Even though it was all selected for some reason when I placed it in the new world space it was at different vertical levels. Don't know what the hell was going on there. So I'm going to try and make a better one today. Maybe try grabbing a whole cells worth of the villa aligning them vertically, then trying to connect them cell by cell. It's a pretty big area so it's a little tricky. I want to grab at least the section from the belltower to the central fountain. Wish the geck would just let me duplicate a cell, but so far the only time that has ever worked is interior cells :( But from what I did get done, it's pretty cool. I didn't spend long in the villa while playing dead money, plus the gloom and cloud effects obscured a lot, so I didn't have a very accurate impression of the villa. But it has some really nice assets. Hispanic architecture, saltine tiles, white cobblestones, ceramic blue & white tiles, adobe walls, fountains etc. I think it would take very little re-texturing to make our own artistic vision. The problems as I see them are;1. Tossing the external lodges which is no biggie we can use them in v1.x on the hunting lodge(s). 2. Lack of any large building interiors in the villa section for the casino & hotel. I don't think this is a biggie either, we can just throw up a facade and as long as we line up the interior of the building with exterior placement of the windows it should be all good. There might even be ready made pieces in other areas of the dlc (like the actual sierra madre itself) The streets need to be widened for our vision of the park and I haven't found too many good solutions to that problem yet. The smaller streets width is equal to the arches but I'm sure there are some alternative solutions. 3. The biggie: We cut out anyone that doesn't have dead money. It was released for all platforms by Feb 22nd and is $10. I tend to think a lot of people have it and we wouldn't be loosing too many players by requiring it. For me, I'm thinking full speed ahead. It's going to look really good and give us a lot more options for creativity & atmosphere for the park exterior. devinpatterson
You should put this up on the main sunset thread, it's good stuff, I think other people would like to see it. In the sunset history thread less people will view it I really like the dialog. It captures the hyper patriotism bordering on all out paranoia, of the fallout world very well. Just a few details; [may or may not get it, if he does it should be very low quality, maybe even "Sunset power armor" which was really chinese armor given aftermarket modifications and a SS color scheme- Chinese power armor was supposedly years behind US stuff, and so long as Bill never learned where it came from or how sucky it really was, then he wouldn''t object to it.] I'd suggest you have the correspondence with a contact in the military or a military contractor. Vault-tec was certainly intertwined with the gov and military but didn't really produce standard arms. Their only weapon related research was FEV and a power armor variant. But there are lots of contractors like Colt (firearms), H&K (firearms), West Tek (power armor), Wattz Electronics (laser), BeatCo (powerfist) and many others in the wiki vault. I think that in the fallout world they would sell to any american patriot of means. So the t-45 had been in service for over 10 years, don't think it's a big deal if Bill got it. It would probably be trivial for Bills connections and I'm putting in a few modified weapons like a guass sniper anyway so it fits in. The T-51b would be in service from Jan to Oct so that might be a more difficult, but in a fallout world I don't think military weaponry is regulated in the same way as ours. I get the impression that it wouldn't be difficult for Bill to have a suit (or a few of) the T-51b with his connections. You can have the dialog come from the army (Mechanized Cavalry Regiments division) or from West Tek themselves (manufacturer). I'd ditch the chinese armor idea, they never really went the powered armor route, relying on their propriety stealth suit tech. It might be argued that Bill would wear powered armor in a post apocalyptic world (not his style, but needs must), but I think a stealth suit would be a really tough sell to a personality like his. If possible I had a few other subjects of dialog that would be great to include. One could be a new security team employee asking whey we have all these orders for "archaic weapons" and a veteran security team member saying this "archaic weaponry" can take a elephant down, or a cowboy shooter can put 10 rounds in a target in 1.73 seconds etc. This is partly for atmosphere but also to emphasize the deadly nature of the android cowboy shooters so the player is prepared. Another should be one security guard emailing another about seeing Bill take apart a hard target in a spectacular fashion (same purpose as the message above). Also can you throw in some correspondence between the park tech/medical and vault-tec regarding difficulties and anomalies in the mainframes behavior to help reinforce the story line?
