Tree Lighting Problem

Hi, I'm not sure if there's some simple trick I'm mising here but for some reason I can't seem to get light to affect trees. Here's an example http://i51.tinypic.com/vku9g.jpg

Sometimes I can get a small patch of the tree to be lit a little bit, if the leaves are physically inside the light source, but other times it stays dark over the entire tree, even if the wall behind it is almost whited out. I get the same results with other trees as well, but nothing else. Is there some special lighting requirement for trees?

well, I've done some more experiments with this and it's making even less sense now. I've been able to light up a tree by using a Fill light with a radius of 1024, but only if it's outside the room. Even keeping the tree and light together, the leaves go instantly black the moment it enters the vault. If it's smaller though (scale 0.2) I can light it up when it's inside. Also, I've found trees will only respond to 1 light at a time, sometimes they are brighter if the light is further away, sometimes it's the opposite for most leaves, but just a few go darker when the light is close. There also seem to be bright and dark areas within the map that don't relate to the current position of the lights, but are revealed only when a tree passes through them.

 

I don't understand what the pattern is here, does anyone here know how trees work in the GECK? I need to solve this problem to complete a mod I've been working on for months now, so any help would be appreciated.
