Independant ending

During my second playthrough I sided with yes man in hopes of replacing Mr House as the ruler of New Vegas. However, after the talk with the General, Yes Man told me about some upgrades that he didnt mention before. Not only that but the ending doesn't tell me anything about the Couriers fate after the battle of Hooverdam, much less him being the head honcho of New Vegas.

People are also calling this the Independant ending, as in Independant curier or New Vegas?

But the most important question: Did I become the ruler of New Vegas or did I get rick rolled by that smiley face tincan?

House always had an ace up his sleeve. Early on if you ask him about why Benny stole the chip, House replies, "He {emphasis}mistakenly believed he could use the platinum chip to his own ends. One of the problems with a tribal workforce I'm afraid, no inherent understanding of how complex technologies can be."

I was furious after my first playthrough when I realisef that I did everything Mr House asked me to, hoping to earn his trust making him show his face. But before I knew it the battle of hooverdam took place and I became his favourite captain when I wanted to be him.

I felt stupid hoping that he would make some mistake like showing me his face.

Now I feen tricked by some roling smiley face tincan DX!

I also feel more respect towards House, I knew he wouldn't be tricked by some ex-raider.

What annoyed me was that the game made no attempt to explain what kind of government New Vegas will have once it gains independence. One of the reason why I decided to side with Yes Man is because I felt that none of the other factions had New Vegas's interests at heart: NCR only cares about gaining control of the Dam, Caesar just wants to gain more land and prevent the NCR from using the Dam and House just want to wallow in his own power and interests and not a damn thing for the common people. But even after siding with Yes Man I felt as if I just created a police city state rather than an independent nation.

You nailed it on both counts.

When I first did The House Always Wins I was disappointed there was no fullfillment of House's grand dreams in the ending dialogue.

And with Yes Man, exactly: a police state of robots run by an artificial intelligence, whos ultimate purpose is unknown. Yes Man appeared at the end of the game to be a fledgeling AI in the process of coming to grasp with his new identity, and learning. Who knows what that might lead to ultimately, maybe the rise of the machines. One thing is for sure, House was an autocrat and had no interest in democracy so his failsafe "AI" package he left on the network would no doubt reflect that attitude :D
