Not a Mod Question

Ok this is not a mod question but I can't think of any better place to ask than here. I'm in need of a new video card and I need one that can run a heavely modded version of New vegas at max settings without there being any glitches or lag. Any suggestions?

I built my own PC, so I can definitely help you with that

Let me make this a little easier...

I NEED TO KNOW:

[1.] your current system build (What are the parts currently in your computer? (This is essential so we can figure out the wattage requirements, because if your wattage is too low to support your system WITH the new card, then your computer would need a new power supply as well... otherwise it would not turn on or work correctly. If you do not know, say so, and I can help determine it to some degree)

[2.] How much money are you willing to spend?

[3.] Do you have a preference? (ATI or Nvidia?)

Anyways any links I give you are merely a suggestion and are obviously up to your discretion.

It has a Foxconn M61PMV Motherboard with a AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad Core Processor - 3.00GHz, A Corsair H50 Cooler, It has 4 Gigs of 1066 MHz DDR2 Ram (Kingston), Kingston Hyper X Ram Cooler, 600 Watt power supply all in a CoolerMaster HEF 932 Case. My current Video card is the Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 SE. This was my budget build which I think turned out really nice. So I'm wondering if the problem is my graphics card or could it be something else. I'm not picky about what brand I get, both Nvidia and ATI are great brands and I'm willing to go up to $300 on the price. Edited by Thalan1a

one word to you oh-my-graphics-card-people out there, can't seem to say that often enough:

i run fnv, heavily modded, on a bloody geforce gt240, 894mb, settings just a tick below ultra, hdr on and a 1280 widescreen resolution and fades for objects, items and actors to max

i've _never_ experienced _any_ lag, stutter or whatever.

the simple "secret" about this:

turn off f***** v-sync. you don't need it. you're giving away up to half your graphics performance for _nothing_.

try that, and if you then still think you need a new graphics card, go buy one. :-)

V-SYNC really doesn't make that much of a difference? I'll have to look into that, never bothered testing it.

EDIT:

I buy amazing graphics cards just to stay ahead of the game.

I got a ATI Raddeon 6870 for cheap, and it looks pretty cheap right now... good rebate, especially considering the next gen card is 300, and this is half that.

Same card as I have

Definitely Skyrim ready.

EDIT2:

I also recommend you use a new credit card, and account to get an extra $10 off. (if you are already have a newegg account).

Here is the coupon code promotion for new customers.

I always turn v-sync off. The only reason I'm asking about the graphics card is because mine is going out and I want to make sure that I get a good one. I ordered a GXT 550 Ti Superclocked just to find out that it is slower than the GTX 460 SE.

@stevie70

If your just going to com on here and complain do it else were. no one asked for you to come here and complain. In case you didn't notice I am running a lot higher resolution than you are on a graphics card that is going out. I ask for advice on a new graphics card not for you to just come on here and just complain like a poser.

well apart from that i wasn't actually complaining about anything, i just intended to make a suggestion that could possibly spare you the money and, like it said at my post's end, if it doesn't help, you can still go buy a new card. but if you consider that posing, mr. hi-res, so be it. :-)

not necessarily, but potentially up to 50% of your fp/s.

the thing is, vsync syncs the cards signal with a crt-monitor's vertical freq of 50hz iirc, meaning, it puts out a frame, then it _waits_ with the next frame until it thinks the crt has completed a refresh cycle.

so if the card takes say 1,1ms (whatever) to render a frame and the crt 1ms for a cycle, then the card waits the 0,9 cycles for the "crt" to "complete" it's cycle before it passes over the next frame.

absolutely obsolete performance eater on tft's anyway, and on actual crt's (if there still are any), the only thing you'll notice without vsync is a slight 1 pixel high line flicker on screen bottom.

maan, don't get me wrong here, i'm not keeping anyone from buying new cards if they can afford it. but me, i'm just a poor freelance artist & my cards have to last me a long time... :-)

Skyrim

yeah, guess that'll be quite exactly the day the long time my gt240 lasted me ends :-)
