kevkiev
Long story, but just in case it helps: Though loading through 4GB usually doesn't show the steam launcher, it did a couple times this morning so I'm guessing there must have been some kind of update. On the second time, I had switched off automatic updating but (like the first time) it changed my INIs to read only. I (thought I) inactivated the read only thing right afterwards. To my absolute horror, when I started up the game I had *gasp* vanilla textures even though I have a mix of NMC and Ojo Bueno installed and have been playing that wonderful scene for a while now. Figuring that it must have something to do with archive invalidation, I started FOMM to toggled it off and then back on again. To my surprise I got the "your INIs are read only do you want to change that" message (I thought I'd fixed that), so I clicked ok. Though I was able to toggle it off, when I tried toggling on again FOMM crashed. I went to check my INIs and they were both readonly. Though I uncheck the box for both (theres actually no check, its really shaded all in blue), next time I look they're read-only again. Oddly, sometimes I'll open up the INI right after closing it and the readonly box is blank, but after I shut down "computer" and look again, it's read only again. After some googling it appears that's an unfortunately common problem with windows7. But I've tried a few different troubleshooting suggestions and nothing seems to work. So my questions are: is the readonly problem in fact the reason FOMM crashes when I try to activate archive invalidation and, second, HOW THE $!@!%! can I change my INIs back to read only? Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to bang my head against a wall. I can't even play this freakin' game with vanilla texties anymore, not after being spoiled by NMC and OJO. EDIT: Okay, looks like I fixed it, though I don't know how. I changed a bunch of security settings, copied the INIs to desktop then copied 'em back, all without apparent success. Restarted my computer a couple times in the interim. Was even considering DL"g some software that was apparently addresses this problem. All of a sudden though, I was able to toggle on archive invalidation in FOMM and restart the game through the 4GB exe. I was (for the third time) redirected to the steam launcher, but when I shut it down and started through 4GB again, all my textures were there. (Praise be!!!) Then I check my INI files and, lo and behold they had checkmarks and not blue shading in the read-only boxes. I unchecked them and it seems to be sticking (restarted my PC again and the no-read-only was still there.) Sorry to waste y'alls time. But even now I have no idea how the problem resolved itself. All's well that ends well tho I guess. Update: okay, I don't know what's up with steam but I was redirected to the Steam loader for the 4th flippin' time when I started the game (4GB exe) after writing the above. Again, my INIs were changed back to read only. Luckily, there were only the checkboxes again and I unchecked 'em again. Everything still seems to be working fine. Update: well, not quite totally fine... seems in all the confusion some textures are now gone. I'm now in the process of reinstalling NMC, OJO, MG's clutter pack and the High-Res chems textures just to be sure I've got everything. update: dammit, happened again tonight. Start via 4gb, get redirected to the steam launcher and all my INIs get set back to read only. Luckily, clearing the readonly box seems to be sticking now. I used to be a big fan of Steam, but that's decreasing all the time. I paid my dough for the game now get the #$@#! out of my face!!
