Moonri
Okay, so I've been playing Oblivion for about a month lately. Installed it just fine and all of the DLC and shivering isles and patches worked just fine. So after a while, I decide to try adding mods to sort of renew it a bit, as I've played the crap out of this game on the 360. And many many mods works on it, I had about 200 plugins total, using OBMM eventually and BOSS as some conflicts would arise every now and then. But I decided to completely reinstall it, leaving out any mods that I could live without as they would cause some problems, so I deleted everything after the uninstall from the disk. Tried reinstalling it, and (without researching what I was doing) I tried reinstalling many mods at once. So, naturally many many problems occurred, and I thought maybe I should start fresh again. And uninstalled the game again, as well as OBMM and BOSS. Well soon after I tried reinstalling, then playing and I would get a CTD every time. There (in my thinking) maybe it was a problem with the .ini, so I uninstalled yet again, deleted the .ini and the oblivion folder in my Bethesda Softworks folder, and am now reinstalling. I've been looking around the web for answers on my problem, and I see several mixed solutions. However Bben's have been the most informative and would love an answer from him. I've also been reading 2 of his advice articles (reinstalling and mod advice) and immediately after, I give myself a facepalm. So my question here is, after alllll of my noobish mistakes, what can I do to completely start afresh with an unmodded and patched game? I'm on the brink of reinstalling the whole computer. bben46
No need to reinstall the entire computer if you follow my complete uninstall/reinstall guide. Be sure to follow it exactly and when the uninstall part is finished it will be like Oblivion was never on your computer. Then install again from scratch. Be sure to install outside of the UAC controlled Program files folders if you have either Win7 or Vista. Then if you have Shivering isles, install that before any patches. Then patch to the latest version. Be sure to test before installing Shivering isles and again after. Now you will have the vanilla game with no mods and no utility programs - SAVE your data folder in a separate location. Then this is where I recommend adding OBSE, OBMM and any other utility programs you like. Make another save of your data folder, OR, use mTES4manager to create a separate game (clone) that you can return to if your game fails completely again. Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the WIKI section of the Nexushttp://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Oblivion_reinstall_procedure It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice. Link to mTES4Manager: http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35263 Thank you very much, Bben :DI'm almost done installing the game again, and if it doesn't work, I will most definitely follow your guide to a tee.Oh, and I use Vista, and have UAC disabled, as it was obnoxious when i tried many other things, including OBMM. Do you still recommend I install the game to a different location (then turn back on UAC)? EDIT:Maybe it was the .ini? I got the game to work after installation, as it is now completely unpatched/unmodded etc. EDIT2:Going to follow the procedure you gave me anyway, Bben, as I don't want it in the program files. Then reinstall. I'll be back to ask for advice as to an order of which mods to add first to last, and such. I hope it won't be a bother, I simply want your advice on load order and a general direction to go :) EDIT3:Just a quick update, I'm in the defrag process in the complete uninstall/reinstall procedure that Bben has kindly showed me to. I haven't done this on my computer since I reinstalled it about 2-3 months ago, and it is definitely taking some hours. I guess I needed it! ....Also, after reading through the majority of the stickes as well as other threads, I'm realizing it was a mistake to not come here before, to be ignorant of such a wealth of information, and worse yet, to not even have the urge to look for all this before. I hold great respect to all of the contributors. Thank you, each and everyone; you should be awarded something. :) Edited August 17, 2011 by Moonri
Moonri
I wanted to thank Bben one more time and say that you can close this topic. In a different world where we could choose our family, you would have easily been up at the top of the list. :)
