Permissions Question

A long time ago somebody told me if a mod is dead and the owner doesn't reply in a while you can use there models to port to Vegas. I asked a guy if I could use his models and textures in my Vegas mod (obviously all credits go to him) almost 5 months ago now. He never replied and his posting status is pretty much ZERO. Can I use his mods? Or shall I just leave it?

Unless it says in his readme that if he does not respond in a certain amount of time that you can use it (a lot of modders do include that in their readme), then he has not given you permission and you should not use it.

The helm looks like a very simple retex and uses vanilla meshes, it should be pretty easy to recreate.

At that point the rule is generally that if you contact them, but they appear to be gone, and don't reply for a while (5 months is PLENTY), you can use their stuff. Just be ready to take it down or remove it if they come back and demand so. However, if you give them credit where credit is due, chances are they will find out and be like "Ok, cool." and not care or make you remove it.

This of course doesn't matter if it specifically says somewhere something like, 'You may not use any of this stuff, at all, no matter what!'.

Actually getting stuff into Vegas is bloody annoying for me. Nobody has answered my question and its not in the 'Everything you need to know' threads. So thats why I port mods. In GTA Forums I've made hundreds of mods because I'm familiar with that engine. (Even got my own web). I'll check the guys readme now.

EDIT: It says nothing in the readme or page about claimers. He mentioned it is also a modified helmet from Tailor Maid. I'd have to credit that aswell.

Yes PM a moderator, and send the answer here.

Reason I am surprised at that rule, was because a huge amount of FO3 modders came back and where so very angry at all their mods suddenly appearing in NV when they never gave permission. Many are still rather put off.

What is I said is not an actual rule, it's just general curtesy. I could see it being more of an issue going from Fallout 3 to New Vegas though, now that I think about it. Let us know what a moderator says. I'm honestly curious. What I posted above is what I have always heard from others and said to people. Make your best effort to ask, but if they dont respond and nowhere does it say "DO NOT USE MY STUFF!" then you can do it. Of course, if they return and ask it be removed, you have to comply.

Not too sure about that... Personally I don't see any big issue with it, but I remember that there was a very heated discussion in the modders area of the forum where it was shortly discussed whether "compilations" of mods should be allowed, and the majority seemed to agree that if you havn't received permission, then you cannot use it plain and simple. Not to mention that it can be quite frustrating if you start now and is almost finished when a moderator comes by and says that you can't upload it either way.

Oh, one more thing: The chat usually has a moderator available, so you can always check there. I would do it myself, but for some reason it says that I've been kicked from the chat (what have I done now? :psyduck: )
