copy write laws

Does anyone know the rules on using assets from the DLC’s without making the mod dependent on that DLC.

I have a mod for FNV that I’m a day or two from posting it uses the automatic rifle from Dead Money with a shortened barrel (I used Nifescope) and new textures. I have also imported the .45Colt and Thompson SMG from Honest Harts, hover the mod does not require either DLC. Is this legal or am I braking copy write laws

Hi,

you have to make the mod requiring the DLC. Taking it out and make it available without the dlc would be a copyright breach, and make sure you write it into your legal notes.

Everyone is correct.

The mod MUST require the DLC by copyright law.

Failure to do so would be pretty unpleasant http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/rolleyes.gif

Also I hope you're not planning to have the dlc models in your mod.

What you need to do is use the models in the geck in their default directory and then make texturesets for them.

That way your mod should only include an esp and custom texture files.

Weeeeell, technically most mods break all sorts of copyright laws. Pretty much anything that involves redistributing modified original game content (like textures or meshes) isn't really legit, but because the content isn't useful outside of the context of the game it's sort of given a free pass. So when making a mod that uses DLC content you're not trying to meet strict legal standards and encouraging people to think in terms of legalese like that is a bit counterproductive as they're inevitably going to start trying to game the system when it doesn't exist. Really the idea is just 'Don't rock the boat', don't make DLC content usable outside of the context of a NV installation with that DLC.

I know exactly what you mean.

I was going to comment on that during my reply but I figured it's just not worth mentioning.

You're right, but it doesn't really make a difference.

I've just noticed the nexus is a lot more strict when it comes to DLC content.

Usually if you're downloading mods for a specific game... you usually own that specific game. So the content should be okay to send out (in a sense)... Which is why I'm assuming, that it's not strictly enforced.

However should it include dlc content, that's a no go and not everyone who has that specific game, has the dlc.

I always encourage people never to include dlc content unless it's definitely custom-edited content, that seems to be okay to upload.

If it were strictly enforced we'd see most of the content on the nexus disappear. That would be bad. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/ohdear.png
