jihadoftomorrow
Yet, when I set it to Universal everything's fine. What does Universal mean or do anyway? Here are my settings right now that cause loading a save to crash.http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15949445/Images/dasdsadsa.jpg Even if I set it to just Textures and Meshes it still crashes
DrakeTheDragon
Well, "BSA invalidation" is the solution of automatic scanning your folders for external resources to be used instead of the ones from the BSAs and entering their filenames into "ArchiveInvalidation.txt" files. This, however, has never worked reliably ever before (the usage of this file by the game engine, not the way how files were added into it, mind you). Then Archive Invalidation is usually only needed for textures, as external meshes and other files are already used over the internal ones at all times. "BSA Redirection", putting an empty dummy BSA into your data folder and altering your Oblivion.ini so it takes the place of the textures BSA in the "sArchiveList" entry and becomes the one and only BSA requiring its contents to be invalidated ever again, eliminating the need for Archive Invalidation itself entirely in the process, is the only solution I can advise. Just click "Reset to defaults" and you should be fine with the settings you get then. No need to ever bother with Archive Invalidation again after this step (well, unless your Oblivion.ini gets altered and the change to "sArchiveList" undone, of course). If you're using Oblivion from Steam, also click "Reset BSA timestamps" once now, or you might fall victim to the troublesome far-too-recent filedates of the BSAs coming from Steam, preventing any "replacer"-type mods to work ever. But in all cases, and I guess this is what's causing your crashes here, when using BSA Redirection and the dummy BSA is in use through the ini entry, make absolutely sure there's no left-over ArchiveInvalidation.txt file to be found anywhere in your folders anymore (I know the different tools placed it into different folders, and "all" these files need to vanish now)! If you fail to remove them all and there's still one such file left instructing the game to use external file XYZ over file XYZ inside the BSA, which is now an "empty" one after all, it's going to cause multiple random issues. Additionally responsible for the crashes could be "switching" solutions like crazy without knowing what other preparations have to be taken so one solution's remains won't kill the others.Just imagine you uninstall certain textures but leave them listed inside ArchiveInvalidation.txt, not knowing what it does exactly. You'll end up telling the game to use external resources over its internal ones while the external ones are "missing" now. This is "missing XYZ" errors 'forced' by user! I don't yet know what "Universal" does. Can't say I've ever used it myself. But I do know including anything else in Archive Invalidation than just "textures" is only asking for trouble, and using BSA Redirection properly gets you rid of all this hassle once and for all. I hope it helps.
jihadoftomorrow
Yes, that was very helpful. Thank you very much. So I'm guessing everyone should use BSA Redirection over the other options? Also, I saw an ArchiveInvalidation.txt in my oblivion folder, I deleted it but to be sure, this folder is the only place where that .txt file can be found right? DrakeTheDragon
Yes, that was very helpful. Thank you very much. You're welcome. Always glad I could help.So I'm guessing everyone should use BSA Redirection over the other options?Yes, that's common consensus as far as I'm aware. Some people still prefer Alteration, but it has to be done again and again whenever any of the files change, get added or removed, just like the "ArchiveInvalidation.txt"-based approach, so it's pretty much just considered inferior to BSA Redirection nowadays. Also, I saw an ArchiveInvalidation.txt in my oblivion folder, I deleted it but to be sure, this folder is the only place where that .txt file can be found right? Not quite. I can't remember all the locations the automated tools were creating these files in up to now, or all the folders the game engine looks for these, but I remember I got such a file placed inside "data" also, so that's already 2 locations to look for them at. jihadoftomorrow
Alright I've done a search on my oblivion folder for any ArchiveInvalidation.txt files and come up with none now so I guess that means there's no more. The crashes have also stopped and I am using BSA Redirection. Thanks again for that informative and helpful post!
