Enabling Category Filtering

How about introducing Sub-Categories so it's easier to find things?

For example:

Gameplay Effects & Changes - New Spells, Spell Effects, Combat

Weapons & Armour - Complete Sets, Swords, Bows, Armours

Clothing - Robes, Other

Obviously you should allow authors to assign their mods to multiple sub-categories, to make it easier for users to find things but restrict them from abusing the system. While the tagging system is a great idea, I (and I'm sure a lot of other users) just browse the categories rather than performing searches. Clicking on the "Main Category", obviously should show everything associated to it, with the "Sub-Catgegory" working as a filter.

Under the "Organise" section, maybe introduce further filtering, such as only show those with ratings over a specified amount. There should be an option to save this is the user's preferences so user's don't have to constantly change the settings everytime they browse the category.

BUGS

======

There are currently 2 bugs with the "Organise" feature. I mentioned it in a previous post, but I think I annoyed Dark0ne (unintentionally btw in another post) and think he's currently ignoring all posts I make (maybe even this one!!!! haha  ).

1. Upon going into a category, when the Organise is changed to: [Rating, Desc], the page number automatically goes to the 2nd page? I think this only occurs during searches, can't really remember.

2. When the "Organise" settings are changed, and the ">>" is pressed, the settings will default back to [Name, Asc]. Pressing a page number instead of ">>" works correctly.

Cheers.

This is what "file tagging" takes the place of. You can now search for tags instead of file names. Of course, users must tag files themselves, so not every file will be tagged (not yet anyway). I think what you might want is for mod authors to tag their own files before it gets posted on the site. TES Nexus obviously needs more work to be done, but so far it is better than the old TES Source ;) (albeit with a few missing features that most likely will be implemented in the near future I hope  )

BTW, Dark0ne, I hope you don't mind, but looking at some of these emoticons kinda hurts my eyes, as there's some artifacts around the edges. Maybe cleaning those up wouldn't be so bad. These are the culprits that need fixin': o_O     :( :) :P   ;)

See the white-looking artifacts around the edges? Maybe now would be a good time to fix that eh?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm well aware of the tagging feature, but when you're browsing a category and want to check ALL the Bows in the [Weapon and Armours] with more than 10 ratings and an overall rating of 9.2 for example, and then when you've finished decide you want to check all the shields, you've kind of lost your position to where to you are within the category.

As with tagging systems which relies on the community to perform some kind of function, all items NEVER entirely get "tagged", what someone might think bows go into "weapons" another will think "archery" or whatever? It's far easier for mod authors to do the work I guess?

Anyway, maybe you should use the voting feature to ask what users prefer, I mean thats what its for right? I myself like to use set categories which are pre-assigned as they usually encompass all mods for that particulary category, without missing anything (usually, anyway). It also avoids finding the same mod being found when I perform subsequent searches which is often the case when using tagging systems, which is a definite problem when categories like "Weapons and Armour" contains over 1200+ items.

Thanks.

You're quite right - I never thought of it that way  Anyway, it seems what I suggested earlier (mod authors being able to tag their own files) will be implemented soon, so maybe that might help somewhat, although trying to implement category filtering might be tricky (or not, I really wouldn't know  )

Well, 18 months has gone...

2500+ files in "Weapons'n'Armors" category!!!!

1800 files in "Gameplay effects'n'changes" category!!!

1500 files in "Misc" category!!!

Do you still wandering it's easy to find whatever you want? Tagging was never an easy and effective tool. Subcategories are much more convinient, it is clear where you should go to find certain stuff.

And another idea: to make little icons on mod browsing page: lore-friendliness and requirements (SI, Kotn, other official plugins). That will exclude situations when people downloading mods wandering  and after that :wallbash: .
