HSovieticus
I've recently been browsing all the mods for Fallout 3 and NV, and I see that some people are porting oblivion races over into Fallout. And I also see that people are making custom races especially for Fallout. But I do not understand what a race is. Are the races playable? Can they be used to make NPCs? And if so, does each race have its own facial and body characteristics? Or are these races more like creatures (clothing is a permanent part of the character, cannot change outfits or be deprived of an outfit, etc)? PowderdToastMan
all of that is possible. in most cases, clothing will replace whatever body you have on. As long as the aftermarket race shares the npc skeleton, clothing will override it.
HSovieticus
Can you make clothing variants which will replace the main versions when the clothing or armour is worn by a certain race?
PowderdToastMan
If by race you mean body replacer, then the clothing will always override it as long as the same skeleton is used, otherwise it will not let the wearer equip it. Thats with clothing that includes a body mesh and texture overlay that replaces the naked body. Rarer clothing, always from a mod and not from the vanilla game will on occasion not replace the body and will in fact, overlay the shown body, but that is rare. In other words, lets say you make an aftermarket body replacer for an npc. When the npc equips lets say, a vault 12 jumpsuit, the default shape vault twelve jumpsuit will appear and you will be unable to tell that they have an aftermarket body. Open up the geck and look at the prostitute outfit. You will see that, instead of the areas around the outfit being blank, there is actually a skin mold for the body and when it is equipped, it will replace whatever you have. If texture is the replacer your trying to accomplish, the texture will override the default one as long as you direct it to and in some cases you must make it a master file to take affect the skin tone. It will replace on everyone who can wear it, not just certain races
HSovieticus
So, if I wanted a race to maintain body shape when wearing certain outfits, then I would have to make a custom outfits with a custom armature for both the body replacement and any clothing that the race might wear. That would make it so that the race can only wear outfits with a matching armature, and no other race could wear the same outfit (as defined by the geck). But there is no way to give a geck outfit a .nif file for each race? Not even possible by doing some clever scripting? No. But you dont need the aftermarket body replacer for a nif shaped for a aftermarket body. It will take over vanilla bodys too.
