PaulEmil
I am looking to replace my X800XL (which seems to be somewhat broken). However, I am limited to AGP cards. Does anyone know what the best replacement would be (ATI cards for preference)?
Ethre
The best, probably a 7950GT. Or a x1950Pro. x1950 is supposed to be a bit slower than the 7950GT, however for the price difference I doubt it would be worth it. The 7950GT is a major power sucker too. Vagrant0
AGP cards seem to be getting phased out. You might be better off just getting a reasonably good AGP card to last you till you can upgrade your whole system to work off PCI. No sense spending 200+ if it won't be good enough to run newer things.
PaulEmil
Okay. Thanks for the advice.
Jumonji
I recently bought a X1950 Pro 512 AGP for my AGP system (along with a cpu upgrade to AMD 64x2 4800) and I think it's fantastic. I can run Oblivion at hightest settings in1680x1050 resolution on my 22" monitor! Until you see Oblivion like this, you aint' seen nothing. I figure my dated Asus A8V motherboard has another couple of years in her with this upgrade. Just make sure you have a good cpu and at least 1 gb of ram (2gb is better) or you won't get the full benefit. -Jumonji P.s., - OH - ONE IMPORTANT DETAIL!!! Make sure you use the Omega Drivers, not the catalyst drivers that come with ATI. You can download them here: Omega Drivers. The Omega Drivers are rock-solid, stable, and have built-in overclocking. Trust me on this one, you will be very happy with Omega and ATI.
Ethre
AGP is dieing, but not dead. It would depend on how soon you plan to upgrade your computer. And I'll second the omega drivers.
PaulEmil
Sorry if this is thread necromancy, but I now have an X1950 Pro! I am also downloading the Omega drivers recommended by Jumonji. Hilariously, the only problem with the card was that I had insufficient wattage from my PSU. Cue spastic hard drive performance. But that has now been sorted. Hooray!
