ptpatil
Hi, I've played Oblivion a while back in 2006 when it came out, and it ran OK from what I remember, I tried to pick it up again a few days ago and it's almost unplayable. I did all the regular things you do when you have a problem like this, like defragging my harddrive, getting rid of spyware, getting rid of unneeded programs and such (A general clean out), still it did little to impact it. My computer ranks as mid to low end, but I should atleast get some playability. Here are my specs: P4 2.4 Ghz single core.768mb RAM 160gb HDDRadeon x700 Pro 256mbWindows XP Home Ed. Here are the settings I try to run it at, getting crappy performance: 640 x 480 resMedium texturesTree/Actor/Object fade - around 25%Grass distance- 0, no grassView distance- distant land + buildings, no treesNo int shadowsNo Ext shadowsNo self shadowsNo shadow filteringNo bloom lightingWater detail normal - no reflections, ripples onAA- off with these settings I get around 8-11 fps outside in the city, around 17-18 outside in the prison sector of Imp. City.I get around 21 or so indoors (except a count's castle's entrance, where it drops drastically to about 4-7 fps). I have the following mods installed Streamline 3.0 (for better performance)Quietfeet (also for better performance)Cyrodiil Complete Retexturing 1-4 with Patch 1 (also for performance) Should I be getting better rates or is this normal for my machine? Any tips of better framerates or reasons why mine are so underwhelming? Thanks, I appreciate any responses
BlueShiftSolo
That's a pretty old system you've got there... Try Oldblivion (http://www.oldblivion.com) That is, unless my knowedge of ATI cards and their unpredictable numbering is out of date, which it is. I believe your card is a 2004 card, so I'm not completely sure whether you'd need to go as far as oldblivion.

Unfortunately I have v1.2 of oblivion which refuses to work with oldblivion, I might reinstall and only patch up to 1.1 or something.
Abramul
My system is comparable, and I get OK performance with no performance mods. I have applied a few of the tweaks listed here. I also use Low textures, I think. Differences between our systems: -I use an Athlon 64 +2800, which is 1.80 GHz. Either better or worse than yours.-I have 1 GB RAM. I believe it's PC-3200.---You didn't mention what speed yours was.-I'm using XP Pro. I use the Classic style, which may or may not be more efficient.---I do NOT have Windows Genuine Hardware Lock-in installed. When's the last time you cleaned out your computer? masterchief1517
Hmm, odd, before I put together my new system, I was using a 2.6 Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB RAM, an ATI Radeon 9600 (128 mb), and a soundblaster audigy 2. But I was able to run at a resolution over 1024 x 768, I had all the graphics at around medium settings, and I left off HDR and AA, but I still got higher frame rates than you did, Usually around 25-30, but occasionly it drop to 10 or 15 frames, this being around forts in the middle of the wild with multiple NPCs/creatures near by. So I could recommend that you at least start by defragging your hard drive, this should speed up your load times; turn down your gfx settings/install oldblivion (I've never used it, but it should help you out); and dig through and apply some tweaks that Abramul mentioned. TheTerminator2004
Well, I could get about 12-15fps outside at medium settings. I don't know if I still do- I just reformatted my computer, and haven't reinstalled Oblivion yet. Your graphics card is fine- while I haven't a clue how the numbering system works, I have a Radeon x600, which is presumably worse, so I doubt that's causing the problem... I also have 2 3.0Ghx Intel P4 processors, and a gig of RAM. Everything else you said is the same. I did, however, have my graphics settings set higher than your's... I can't remember most of them, but I had 800x600 resolution, Bloom enabled (x600 doesn't support HDR :( ), and full LOD distance. I didn't have any performance mods installed- perhaps one of them is causing the problem? Try turning them off, and see if it helps.
ptpatil
Oh thank god for oldblivion! I reinstalled Oblivion to Vanilla, and applied Oldblivion. I'm happy to report I'm getting around 25-30 fps outdoors in the imperial city at 800 x 600 with medium settings and no shadows or HDR/AA, around 18 fps when I piss off the guards, but I can live with that. I've also installed drivers called Omega drivers, they've also given me a BIG performance boost (my previous drivers were Catalyst 6.2 I think). Also applied some tweaks given by Abramul, thanks for that. Thanks to everyone for the help!
