Fcom Brief Black Screen Crash After Bash Patch

First time posting here, I'm a total noober. I've been trying to get Fcom installed all day, I followed the install instructions as perfectly as I could XD but alas, it has failed me. I downloaded every mod needed, put them all in data folder, got all the patches, BOSS, Omod, wrye bash, all that good stuff. I ran boss to get the proper load order, no problem, I set up the bash patch like it said, everything lol..

But now, when I run oblivion from obse, omod, or wrye bash, a little black screen pops up for a second, and then poof, nothing. And if I run it from the launcher, nothing happens. I have the latest update of oblivion, latest update of wrye bash, all that. Load order is correct according to the install instructions and BOSS, I'm pretty sure, and no master files are missing.

Anyone know what to do?

Did you test the install after each mod was installed, or just install them all and then hope it works? For best results all mods should be installed one at a time then play test and save to be sure that the mod didn't mess up your game. FCOM is also very particular about when each mod is installed. If you didn't install in the exact order that the web page tells you to, then this could be the issue.

Also, when posting load orders, use Wrye Bash and right click on the header "File" and choose to list mods. Once the new window opens, select all, copy, then paste in your thread. This will allow us to see the exact load order with load order numbers as well as which are active mods, which are not, and which are merged. It will put a spoiler tag into your post so that your post won't appear to be really long as well which makes reading the forum a little nicer :)

Do you have Shivering Isles and is your game patched to 1.2.0416? If you have a GOTY edition it comes pre-patched. If you're not sure, "readme.txt" in your \Oblivion\ directory should have your version in the header.

If you can't say yes to both of these questions, I'd start there.

Next, are you running Vista/7 and if so, is Oblivion installed in the default location? (C:\Program Files\) If so, Windows UAC will cause problems with modding Oblivion (though it shouldn't cause CTD on load). In this event, I'd say move your Oblivion install to somewhere like C:\Games\ (or any other folder Windows UAC doesn't control) following Bben's Guide and start from scratch. The first thing you should do after you reinstall is go ahead and make a character save in game. I'd personally recommend playing through the tutorial dungeon (the sewers) up until you get to the gate that lets you out (the one where you have the choice to to make changes to your character) and making a permanent save (that you never save over) before exiting.

Then start installing FCOM in chunks and testing in game as you go.

Thanks for the responses, and the tips. :) My oblivion is patched, but I don't have SI, I didn't know that was required? In the installation guide it says it's optional. I'll try to start from scratch, make the character and everything, like you said. When I test the game after adding each mod, what am I looking for? Simply looking to see if it doesn't crash?

Thanks, a lot!

I'd suggest running around in the game world and actually seeing whether or not the mod has actually taken affect. There are plenty of bugs and quirks that can occur when installing mods and testing them as you go usually turns out to be less time consuming, and a lot less of a headache than throwing twenty mods on your list and then trying to debug an issue.

Alright, I'm more than willing to try it all again, but what seemed to happen last time, I could start the game no problem, make a new character and what not, but as soon as I did the final part of the installation guide, (the bash patch setup) that's when all the launchers started freaking out and flashing the black screen, and I feel like that's just going to happen again :/ I'll start from scratch though, and see what happens.

When dealing with Wrye Bash, be sure to look at his help files on how to properly build a bashed patch. This will save you some headaches as some of the options that are able to be set shouldn't necessarily be set unless they are needed for a specific reason. When you highlight a mod in the mod list, the lower right should give you the bashed tags you need to set for that mod.
