Far Harbor, simply, crashes.

Okay... *breathes in through teeth*

So, I've been on hiatus, right? I come back, I try to play fallout 4 since I've been wanting to check out the new survival mode. But, it doesn't want to cooperate. In fact, even when I unchecked each and every last one of my mods, this game simply won't run anymore. It starts to load the save, you get the loading screen... and before it loads in a map, it just stops and CTD's.

This began after Far Harbor's introduction... hence the title.
That's the only thing that's different from before, a time when my rig purred like a kitten.

So yeah, this is uh... me asking for a hand here figuring out what's wrong.

I didn't put this thread in the mods section, because I'm not using mods anymore.

Is there something particular I have to do in order to get this game to work (again)?

Or is this one of those classic 'Thesda' moments that makes gamers weep at night?

If you've used interface mods like def_ui, delete the interface folder from the F4/data directory.

You could also try resetting your inis by deleting them and launching the game via Steam to get the default ones back although nothing in there should prevent the game from starting if it worked before Far Harbor arrived.

Finally, validate the game cache.

If you aren't in Far Harbor, or on the quest to begin Far Harbor, there is little chance Far Harbor is the reason for the crashes. The 1.5 update is the culprit I expect, and ack_Thanatos explains the most important thing you need to do in their first sentence. Get rid of the UI mods, and also get rid of the interface folder. If that fixes it, then you needn't do anything else. You can probably find updated versions of the UI mods now as well.

I'm fairly certain that I don't have any mods in that category (UI tweaks), but I could be wrong. I'll try what you've suggested, and be back shortly with an update. ^^

Well son of a gun, that seems to have done the trick! It starts now... and here I thought I didn't have any. O.O
I guess this should stand as a lesson to anyone who finds themselves in the same fix that I did. ^_^ Thanks a bunch.

Gotta test it with my mods next, but that's it's own discussion I suppose. :P

I recently cleaned up my PC and been reinstalling stuff.

I reinstalled Fallout 4 yesterday, but when I updated to patch 1.5.. boom, constant crashes. the game won't even start.

and before you ask, no I don't have any mods installed.

I googled all night and every solution is about ui mods or whatever. but no one replies when people without mods installed ask the same question.. any help here? thanks in advance!

What do you mean, you updated to 1.5? The beta patch? That's the only thing that would make sense since you reinstalled the game yesterday and what you downloaded is the most up to date version of the game, no updating required since Steam pulls the whole content from the most recent pool when you do a fresh install.

Basically, check if you accidentially installed the beta patch. If the answer is yes, try opting out of the beta. If the answer is no, more info would be helpful. Graphic drivers up to date? Contents of the plugins.txt (yes, that could cause it even if you don't use mods.)? Have you tried validating your game cache?

You could also try deleting all your ini files and start the game via the launcher to generate the default ones again, maybe something is broken in them.

And finally, as tired as you seem to be about it, check your Fallout4/data folder for a folder called interface anyways. When you uninstall a game there are sometimes leftovers that won't be removed automatically so if at any point in time you used UI mods, the folder might actually exist and get used when you install the game to the same location again. The same goes for ENB or Reshade files. You can take a screenshot of the contents of the F4 folder and the data folder, upload them to imgur or something and link them here, maybe we can spot something that's missing or wrong.

Anyone out there have an idea of what's going on, can you give me an idea on how to work this out before I just drop this game for good.

Fixed somehow by itself...Wierd thing is I used my nVidia to start the game and suddenly it works. Not going to look the gift horse in the mouth.

A lot of games will not play nice if Steam is installed into the Program Files folder.

Move your Steam install to F:\Steam, for example. Here's how to do it.

There is no guarantee that this will fix the issue you are having but it's a good idea to do that anyways.
