Question about updating to 1.2.0416

Hey. I got a question about my updating to Oblivion v1.2.0416. There may already be a post about this but I'm new to this forum and I've looked and looked for an answer and right now am just too tired to look anymore so plz bear with me here. K here we go. I'm currently playing Oblivion v1.1.511 with OOO v1.3, and I want to update to 1.2.0416 but not sure how that would affect my savegame being it that these official patches edit just about everything in the game as OOO does, so my question is this: will updating the game affect my OOO-enhanced v1.1 savegame, and if so, what should I do to preserve it so that I can play it on v1.2 without issue? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks. Also, would installing Shivering Isles affect the savegame too? I would think not being it that SI is merely an add-on. Thanks in advance.

Well, as you need 1.2xxxxx for Shivering Isles anyway, it would affect your save.

However, I think that by using something such as Wrye Bash or even OBMM you could update your save game. I don't know if this is true, have only heard about it, never tried it.

See ya,

Cris.

Ok thanks for the info. I've read a little about Wyre Bash but I thought it was just for xferring a savegame from an older version of OOO rather than the game itself but I dunno. Would SI still work on 1.1, I mean, do I really HAVE to update to play SI? I know there are bugs and all but wouldn't UOP fix all that or do I have to have 1.2?

Yes, SI needs 1.2. Now if you've already bought SI, then you might as well install it, or you're just wasting your money, but if you haven't, then don't bother. I'll tell you now, that SI isn't worth it to have to suffer through 1.2.

Yeah I've read that people were having problems with the 1.2 patch, but I also read that there's an unofficial patch that fixes most of those nasty bugs that infest 1.2. I really want to check out SI but I REALLY don't want to make a brand new guy just for that. Oh well I guess it can't be helped. Just completed the main quest so now I"m gonna go drink myself stupid and stab beggars for 14 days while I wait on my dragon armor. Btw, can I run KOTN on 1.1?

I have heard HEAPS of people bagging 1.2, but no one says WHY it is so bad. Those of us not in the know don't know you and thus wouldn't really trust what you say just because you all say it. Can anyone put forth a few good reasons why 1.2 is so evil?

thanks

Well, dangle, I don't know much about it either so I wouldn't expect u or anyone to believe me. I'm just typing out what I've read about it. Where u go with it is totally your call. They say it's bad mainly because the supposed bug fixes didn't do squat except create more bugs, some of which can really crap out your game thus diminish on the experience of it and such and such.... Then I read about some sort of unofficial patch that u install and activate as u would any mod. I didn't read much further into it since the UOP isn't my problem at the time but I believe it fixes the bugs that the official 1.2 patch came with. This information might not be true so, as stated above, it's your decision to believe me or don't.

I hate to be repetitious but would KOTN work with Oblivion v1.1?

Essentially, if you update to 1.2, you'll probably need to start over from scratch because you'd be changing OOO versions as well. If you bought SI, you might as well just do it, update to the latest patch, and get it overwith. If you don't have SI, you have no reason to update to 1.2. KOTN was made in 1.1, and actually has conflicts with SI and 1.2.

The biggest problems with 1.2 is that it does alot of stuff to the engine which ends up breaking mesh linkings (infamous exclaimation marks everywhere), breaking any custom shaders (forget using most spell mods, or visually enchanted weapons). Comes with a bugged up CS where several features have been broken or disabled. And those are just the ones I remember. There's a big list on the official forums (or was) if you're really interested.

What it really boils down to is point. Without SI 1.2 doesn't add anything to the game. It doesn't really fix any bugs which were a serious issue before 1.2, doesn't allow more mods (since 1.2 tends to break most 1.1 and earlier mods, and most 1.2 mods are based on the modified .esm (thanks to a poorly executed SI implementation)). Short of just being able to play through SI, there isn't any meaningful benefit to 1.2, but there are plenty of things which are now worse.

I bought SI, played through it, reinstalled to 1.1, never cared to look back. I was hoping they would get around to releasing a better patch one of these days, but seeing as it's been several months, that isn't likely.

cheers,

well i had to reinstall my game anyway so the fact that i would have to start my game over isn't going to hurt me any more than i am already.

When you talk about the mesh links and shaders; do you mean just the cool looking mods, or even the official game ones too?

i'll give it a go (one day, when my computer is working*) and come back with my opinion (if i could be ar$ed)

*my computer has been down for about 3 months now, i am past the stage of getting the shakes and moving on to blurred vision.
