Top 5 Fallout 3 songs?

1. Way Back Home

The setting makes this song so melancholy and sad, both because of the way the world is compared to how it was and because of the storyline. No Vault to go home to, no Dad, not even Amata. And what about the trees, and the owls, and the birds? Never even seen one.

2. Hail, Columbia

It's a sharp, up-tempo march that inspires you to persevere, yet it also has a kind of sentimental touch to it, as if asking you to remember what it is you're fighting for.

You won't find a I-IV anywhere in this song. The drums drive relentlessly forward, but never the melody. The contrast is beautiful.

3. "Rhythm for You"

Now there's a rhythm perfect for scavving. It's as if the person who wrote it created that rhythm just for post-apocalyptic scavs rifling through lockers and toolboxes.

Da-ba-doo-ba Da-ba-doo-ba Da-ba-doo-ba Dah ...

Then there's this interlude that starts off with a diminished apeggio and it gets really quiet except for like a trumpet and 3 beats of silence, like this:

ba-da bah ba da bat daah ... <tick> <tick> <tick> ... ba da baa ba da bat daaah ...

Like that pause between dropping plungers and picking up fission batteries to carefully listen because you're sure you heard something ...

This song is like the scavenger's anthem. Love it!

4. "Fox Boogie"

I can't hear this song during a firefight without having a sublime Quentin Tarantino moment.

You're too exposed for sneaking, you're at full health, your Xuanlong Assault Rifle is fully repaired, you have 8 million rounds of ammo, and you're surrounded by enemies.

Do you carefully plot each one's demise, pausing for VATS and stimpacks like this was a chess match?

f*** that. *bambambambam*, body parts flying, the bass walks and the sax wails ... that's a moment right there.

5. "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall"

I don't even know if I like this song, but ever since I played Fallout I've gone around singing it. I sing it in the shower, I sing along during the game, I sing when I run, pretty much wherever nobody could overhear me I'm all, "Some folks can looooose the bluuuues in their hearts ... but when I think of youuu ... another shower starts!"
