arrenmog
i currently own a ATI™ Radeon® X1300 Pro, PCI-e X16, 256MB with two CPU's at 1gb at 2.13 GHz each giving me 2gb RAM, i am thinking of buying a XFX 7950GT, 550M AGP, 512MB DDR3 DUAL DVI Graphics Card how much will buying this increase the frame rate from 20fps roughly. or just how much better is this. also, if you can find anything better for the same or less that will help one last thing, are there other things i could upgrade to increase the preformance on games? any help will be appreiciated ArrenMog
TheTerminator2004
The performance increase will depend on the rest of your computer. Personally, I don't think you should buy that card- the specs aren't that much better, and if you're going to buy a new card, you may as well get a good one that'll last for longer. You can get the Nvidia 8x series cards pretty cheap (£60 or so for a 512mb 8500GT), so you might consider going for one of them instead.
arrenmog
the reason i decided that i might buy this graphics card was because it was recommended to me on an online chat with a person at dell. he rcommended this as it was the best card that he said was tested on my computer which is a dell dimension 9200(but he didn't seem to have a list of what had been tested in front of him as he only mentioned 3) with the card you have reccommended, i am not sure if it has been tested or not, so how can ensure it will work? what sort of other parts of the computer does the preformance rely on as the dell man told me that the ram and graphics card was the only thing that really mattered on the preformance side of things. is there anything that will improve preformance more than a better graphics card? is it very likely that it wont be compatible with my computer? and can you reccommend anything else as it would help alot? (max £150/$300 [though i would prefer around £100/$200 i can strech]) thanks for the reply i usually dont get any at all let alone one that quick. TheTerminator2004
Most of the things in your computer affect performance- there's no point having an amazing graphics card if the rest of your computer's not very good. The main things are processor and RAM, but other bits, such as disk drive and motherboard can have a lesser effect. As for whether DELL have tested it in their computer... that really doesn't matter. DELL computers are all geared towards people who only use it for work, music, pictures, etc, so they don't bother to test high performance graphics cards on the grounds that no-one would buy them anyway, so they don't need to bother. I have a Dimension 9150, and I'm planning to install a GeForce 8500GT on it- I've already ordered it (It's actually arrived, but my mum's got some strange idea into her head that if I open up the computer to plug it in, I might break it, so she's confiscated it, and says that if my computer works with no problems until January, then she'll let me install it. She's a bit of an idiot.), and it should work fine. If you're installing a really new graphics card on a much older motherboard (which you probably won't be, with a Dimension 9200) then you might get a few minor graphical glitches. As for price... you can get one of the newer GeForce 8800 cards for less than that, if you order online. And, like I said, that card you're thinking of buying isn't really much better than your current one, and probably wouldn't be worth the cost. It is an AGP video card which is older than the video card you currently have which is PCI-E. So I would follow The_Terminator's suggestion and buy one of the Nvidia 8 series cards. TheTerminator2004
That's a point! I'd completely forgotten about the difference between AGP and PCI-E. Besides, if you have a PCI-E card, then DELL won't have given you an AGP slot- it's the same with my computer.
arrenmog
so if i bought any one of the GeForce 8500GT's it will definately work on my computer as long as its a PCI-E card?
TheTerminator2004
Well, it won't definitely work... when it comes to computers, nothing will definitely work... it should work, and almost certainly will, however, so you should buy it. Like I said, I have one for my Dimension 9150, and while I don't know for certain it works, my PC meets all the required specs.
