Some idea of budget might also help. There are alot of games I can think of that can be played for extended periods of time, but most tend to either be older games, or MMOs. Jonlissla
Why not try out Grim Fandango? About the best game I've ever played. "My scythe, I like to keep it next to where my heart used to be." - Manny Calavera
Septim741
By all means, get Hellgate: London. Quite refreshing after long hours in Oblivion! Good luck in your search!

Vagrant0
If you don't mind some older games (that you can probably buy cheap):NWN 1TES: MorrowindDungeon Keeper 2Fable - The lost ChaptersBlack and White (BW1 is different from BW2, both have good and bad parts) If you don't mind Turn Based Strategy:Galactic Civilizations 2 (very customizable space strategy) A fairly good web-based MMO that doesn't require broadband:http://www.forlornonline.com/It's a bit low graphic, but has exceptional depth and complexity. To throw it in the same category as other web games would be a severe insult. Has a free trial and is constantly being worked on.(referral link)

Abramul
The Geneforge series is worth a mention. I should note that one of the aspects I see as a plus is their reuse of the art from prior titles, allowing more focus on important aspects.
