Return of the King:

Just seen it and it absolutely rocked. For the first hour (ish) I wasn't enjoying it, it wasn't living up to what I expected it to be but then shelob turned up and I smiled and I couldn't stop smiling at all, to the point that I'm looking back on the first hour and thinking what a fool I was for not smiling. PJ has delivered more than I could have ever dreamed.

It's obvious there's cuts been made, it probably could have done with another week in the editing room to get it perfect (getting the palantir was too easy by far, won't spoil it for people yet to see it though) so some bits don't quite stand up. But I take the extended version as the definitive cut of the film and am certain it'll all be fixed up and I'll cry again (yes I'm a man, yes I cried) and more so when it's released. Pelennor is amazing, the black gate was wonderful, the hobbits are.... well you get the idea.

Now I just need them to do the Hobbit and the Silmarillion and I'll be happy....

I haven't seen RotK yet, but my opinion of FotR and TT is that, taken simply as movies and putting the books out of your mind, they rocked, but there are significant differences from the books and, perhaps unavoidably, I find that the books are better.

The film is a work of genius. Peter Jackson has taken all the best bits from the books, but unfortunately left out some key parts and people, but that hapened in all the books. Like the Saruman vs Gandalf bit that he filmed then cut (ha ha Christopher Lee) and the Dol Amroth Prince.

The battle scenes were, without a doubt, the best ever filmed. It has set a new standard for battle films to achieve, and how made the actors careers.

Useless Trivia: Most people probably know this, but Orlando Bloom (who got a really cool part in the films) broke his back a year before the fliming started, and LOTR was his first film out of acting school.

Useless Trivia 2: Peter Jackson has just had a mansion made near Wellington, NZ. In a part of his huge garden, he has had the whole of Hobbiton recreated, down to the smallest details, because he liked the set so much.

Useless Trivia 3: The trilogy cost $300 million to make. So far, the first two films have made $1 billion each in ticket sales alone.

Only downfall of the film: the ending went on for far too long.

Different ending?!? How can there be a different ending??? You're frightening me!!

I haven't seen it yet, it just started at the theaters today. But I know all the books and also have the two extended versions on DVD.

I think the first two parts were great, even if there were a couple of changes. That's probably unavoidable if you are depending on any studio bosses. But what they made out of it is fantastic and the movies seem even better, if you have seen the bonus material. Generally it's the other way round.

I'm really looking forward for the 3rd extended version, we're already planning our Middle Earth non-stop-weekend. :D :D :D
