Okay so ive been looking online the last few days to find something out about this issue, and haven't found s***. At least anything that helps, so I came here to look and still nothing.

SOOOO, i need help. I have no idea why my game keeps crashing, its vanilla i did the .ini thing and ive tried a few others but nothing has worked so far.

I am running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

i have an i7 processor, 8 gigs of ram, not sure what video card exactly but i just got my laptop and ordered it wit the best one available.

I just want to be ablr to play it and have mods and stuff but i cant even get it to start up past character creation.

lately it wont go past the birthing, and its completely vanilla. when i first started out i got to the skill book part before it crashed.

Im stuck.

Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3

Find the line:

bUseThreadedAI=0

change it to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

Find the line:

bInvalidateOlderFiles=0

change it to:

bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

Add another line after it and insert:

iNumHWThreads=2

This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

Good luck

where am i supposed to add the new line? i addded it right after the last one you said to change and it still froze when i was in the birthing.

Also to be clear am i only supposed to change these or is there other things to also change that will help?

thanks for your help

Strange it should been worked .... After adding the new line I hope you did not let empty space until the next one ....

By any chance , do you use a cell buffer purging mod? If you do disable it.I ask someone here because I was stuck on alien abduction scene on Mothership Zeta DLC (freeze) and iFSS suggested to do that and worked.

iNumHWThreads=2 goes in the [General] section, so move it below bUseThreadedAI=1

Did you install Fallout 3 to your Program Files folder? If so, uninstall it and reinstall it to C:\Fallout 3 instead (or anywhere outside of the Program Files folders). Windows' UAC causes odd things, may not be the cause of this problem, but will prevent others.

In your first post, you mention "its vanilla i did the .ini thing" - which ini thing?

That's just for the Zeta intro, where purging the buffers causes everything to freeze. Though buffer purging can cause more crashes if the game is really unstable - e.g. if someone is playing on corrupted saves, but that shouldn't happen at the start of the game (it wouldn't surprise me though, lol).

I changed the .ini file, i dont know exactly but i found something online somewhere that said it would help, but it didn't. I made copies of the original though, so changing stuff isn;t too much of a big deal. i will try installing to the C drive and not program files though.

Have you made sure that all of your drivers are up to date? For your graphics card, to find out what it is, go to Control Panel -> Performance Information and Tools -> View and print detailed performance and system information (for nicely formatted info). Then go to the manufacturer's (NVidia/AMD/Intel) website to get the latest drivers. You could also check your laptop manufacturer's website to find out if there's any known issues, updates, etc there.

If you get crashes/problems with other 3D games (try Unigine Heaven if you need something else to run), then the problem is with Windows/drivers/hardware, so start looking in that direction if so.

it looks like all my drivers are up to date, my graphics card is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, so i should be ok. i tried running it with xp service pack 3 and 2 settings and as administartor, still froze. so ill keep tweaking it to see if i can get it to go.
