Variable Level-to-Skill Scaling

So, I read through the leaked manual last night and I noticed one very important piece of information that I hadn't heard of before. It is possible this has been posted elsewhere, but this is completely new to me so I figured I'd fire up a discussion about it.

As we all know, each time you increase one of the 18 skills in the game, you get closer to leveling up, and eventually do so. However, unlike in Oblivion/Morrowind the system is no longer linear.

In Oblivion you had to increase your major skills (in any combination) by 10 to level up, but minor skills had no effect on your leveling. We know that there are no major/minor skills in Skyrim and that all your skills go toward your leveling. I assumed based on the quantity of skills available and the level-cap being 75, that it took ~20 skillups to increase your level. This is where I was completely wrong.

The new system for leveling is completely variable. The higher a skill is between 1-100(base) the more it impacts your progression to your next level up.

What does this mean exactly? Well, lets use some made-up numbers for an example.

Our Hypothetical character is level 11 and we're going to go over his progression to level 12. Any high-level skill that he increases will dramatically raise his experience bar for the next level. If he takes his Archery skill from 91 to 92, that could make up for almost 10% of the skill-up required for his next level. However, if he raises his Alchemy, which is only at 19, it will only increase his experience bar by ~2%.

This completely changes everything I had in mind when it comes to leveling in Skyrim. You will now be able to focus on a set core of skills while still being able to use lesser skills and them not artificially over-inflate your level: skills such as Speechcraft and Alteration.

So... am I the only one that this came as a shock to? I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and was the only "new" (at least to me) information I found in the Manual.

Thoughts?

I read something else that gave me the same impression .. cant recall what but it made it sound like a lot of skills you just wont level from as easily as other skills .. which is great in my opinion .. who wants to level from speechcraft? :wallbash:

Well I hadn't really thought about it the way you suggested, I mean I understand how it worked and everything but now thinking about it, to me anyways, it brings about the realization that even though there is not primary/secondary skills this new system seems like it will work quite well.

Am I the only one who read the passage and went gaga over "You can select a Perk immediately or save it for later." While the new leveling program sounds leaps and bounds better than the old one, this little Perk gem sent my min-maxing heart all aflutter.

Could you elaborate on this please? I don't think I quite understand, why would you want to save a perk for later. (I genuinely don't understand i'm not trying to say your wrong or anything lol)

One advantage of saving perk points for later would be to wait until you have a high enough level in a certain skill in order to get a perk in said tree. I think that's pretty sweet!

OOH ok I get it , I thought you meant getting a perk and not using it till later, I didn't realize it meant saving the point itself to use for later. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Yeah, being able to save perks until later is pretty awesome.

I'm all about min/maxing in singleplayer games. I'm just excited that it isn't going to be as rigid and specific as it was in Oblivion.

Hell, I have very specific orders I would level up every single skill in Oblivion just so I could scale my damage properly so it wouldn't take two hours to kill monsters by level 30 (or spell debuff stacking, which was kinda like cheating).

I really am getting quite excited for all the systems in place.

Still crossing my fingers on Enchanted Weapons and Armor being useful...
