if i open oblivion-meshes.bsa and extract it to a folder and change some textures then save the bsa over the original one when i reopen oblivion it stops using archiveinvalidation and resets the game to using the bsa for everything. how do i either stop it from doing that or fix it once it has done it?

Don't save over the .bsa. Put your replacement textures inside of the \Data\ directory following the file path BSA Commander shows you the original had.

Example: Armor pulled from ...\Data\Textures\Armor\Daedric\ needs to go to that folder under your \Data\ directory. If the folders aren't currently there, make them. I'm not sure if capitalization matters or not but as a rule of thumb assume it does.

The only downside to not packing your files in a .bsa is that you lose the compression, but it makes your mod much easier to install and more versatile if you plan on uploading it. Also, replacement textures and animations are exactly what Archive Invalidation is for. It ensures files from the folders inside of the \Data\ directory have precedence over files packed in a .bsa archive.
