MCM on Windows 10

Recommended Posts

So, I've recently gotten a new computer and of course it has the latest version of windows (oy, verse oy) aka Windows 10. I have no problems running NV itself as of yet, but I've tried installing the Mod Configuration Menu a few times using NMM, FOMM and even manually, using the mod managers the installations went quick as you please with no hassle, I booted up the game and there was no option for MCM in the menu, I started a new game and still bupkis for a menu. I followed the manual installation instructions and that was flat out a disaster, I only ended up getting the initial loading credits before I got a black screen with the HUD on it and multiple tracks of music playing in the background- at which point I just completely uninstalled the whole game and reinstalled it to clear up whatever issues might have been there (even going so far as to just plain scrap the whole NV folder to prevent the issue from recurring, probably unnecessary, but it was a really annoying glitch and I didn't want it back). I cleared out all my (dozen) mods, redownloaded MCM and downloaded FOOK as well because I read on the steam forums that MCM only shows up when a mod (or mods) that require it like FOOK are being used. I installed MCM (again) followed by FOOK and I've still got nothing showing up.

Seriously, how the hell do I get this menu to work?

Without knowing what mods you have installed, we can't tell you if you have any that use MCM beside FOOK. But it is also possible that something else you have installed is overwriting the XML files that MCM uses. So I suggest you read this post and see if it clears up your understanding of things.

Use "LOOT" to sort your mod "load order" (LO). It's always useful to post your LO (in "Spoiler" tags. Use the "Special BBCode" button in the "Reply" menu bar). LOOT can copy your LO into a file suitable for posting here. (It's under the ":" with three dots to the extreme right in it's menu bar.)

One other thing. If you have installed your Steam games to the default location, which is "C:\Program Files", that is probably part of your problem. Read the "Installing Games on Windows Vista+" article in my signature and move it.

Thanks for the advice dubious, it's much appreciated. I've got a bit of my own. You might want to edit that installing games post a bit and empasis that in whatever folder the user creates to store their games, they should really, really create a sub-folder as well. Windows 10 uninstaller is utterly merciless and will gut a file of any and all data stored within. I learned this by not fully reading your instructions, reinstalling steam in my user account folder and then foolishly uninstalling it. Oops. Thankfully after a few work arounds I was able to access the new settings system (which mercifully has nothing to do with the account profile) despite my lacking a start menu and am currently resetting my system. Please help other people avoid my boneheaded mistake, at least then this long night of resetting my system will be worth something.

Anyway, it might take a couple days, but once everything is functional and I have my computer working and games running I'll let you know whether or not your advice worked.

I can't believe I actually did that. Also it may well be worth noting that once you start an uninstallation on Win10 you cannot stop it, even it it is erasing your system files.

Good point. I've added that advice as a bullet item. It's one of those things veterans are used to taking into account automatically, usually after having done it to themselves.

Another is: Don't attempt major changes to your system when you are tired. Hard to do when you only have limited time in an evening, I know, but always take the time to ask yourself: Can I afford to risk this going wrong right now?

Ah yes, words of wisdom.

Wisdom in my case being defined as 'falling face first into the big read button that says do not push by tripping over your own ignorance'.

It's a good lesson to learn and at least I didn't have to shell out over a hundred bucks for an OS I don't actually like just to fix it- I just had get creative in accessing the control panel through my wifi quick launcher.

That said, I did follow your advice and the glitch is fixed. Thanks a lot, it was all really helpful. I will say though, this experience has made me much, much more careful in how I mod- I wasn't very reckless to begin with, but my lesson about making sure file paths won't run afoul into anything important has been learned. I'm going to install a couple more mods then go to bed. Thanks again for the help.
