madgamer
Hey, Im not sure if this topic belongs in this section. But I couldnt really find anywhere I thought was right ;). I am workin up my theif character and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions as to what the best gear is for one. I am a Wood Elf, Thief Class, and Theif Birthsign. There are many ways to build a thief but I am the only one to consider not including security as a skill. Why not you ask? Well at level 10 you can do the Quest for Nocturnal and get an Item that will make it possible for you to pick any lock. You might want to use light armor, blade, block, sneak among your choices for skills. A lot of thief builders also like Marksman (I was never one o be good with a bow) although my Redguard fighter even with heavy armor still sneaks well. Of all the skills I think that sneak is one that is most useful. My character in the last game could sneak all the way through an oblivion gate without getting attacked and he was not even a thief type. If you choose on magic I think restoration is the best but it needs to be a major skill to develop because it takes a lot f time and casting th "Heal minor wounds) spell. You could just keep it a minor and train it but even 5 levels f training 10 levels of character would only net you about 50 points. The great thing about this game is the character creation lets you build just about any kind of character you want and one persons thief could be another's fighter. You should invest in the strategy guide as it is a great help in character development and has the answers you need and do nopt have to stop playing and go to a forum or a web site to get an answer. good luck Lawrence
Sypron
Things you would want for custom armor: SneakChameleon Thats it. Anything else is preference. I agree with madgamer, security isn't important, but I say that because I can pick any lock at any level because i'm used to playing the mini game. If you have the Merhune's razor DLC, the Morag Tong armor has some awsome enchantments (especially at lvl 30+)
Malchik
One man's meat... I find that you can become master of the Thieves Guild without a single skill in thievery a downside rather than an upside. To be frank it doesn't matter what you start as, use of any skill gets it to a high level moderately quickly. But if you really want to role play your character (against the design of the unmodded game), and there are many who do, aim for the lightest armour you can (or better no armour at all). You can enchant certain items of clothing that have 0 weight for instance (black wide pants, black shirt etc.) so they are as useful as armour. 100% reflect damage is interesting. You can also fairly easily obtain 100% chameleon but to me that spoils the game completely. I agree with the above posters that sneak is an essential thief skill but for proper rp purposes so is security. IMO it should not have been possible to join the Thieves Guild without certain stats (and the same applies to all the other guilds). It could have been used to stop you being able to join all guilds in one game too. Sadly with so few quests available I suppose they didn't dare risk the complaints. Anyhow you can do that for your own rp purposes. Get the ring of Khajiit at level 10 from Meridia's quest. Also find a mod that links the jewellery trader in the IC market to the chest he is supposed to have available. (Bethsoft forgot to link it in game). He is supposed to have another high % chameleon ring for sale. But stop there. 100% is just soooo dull.
Grumman
One thing I do find handy is a magic item which gives permanent Life Detection. Anything with a range of 45-60 feet helps to make sure you don't run straight into anyone who might take offense. If you do, you'll probably want to use a mod that makes the spell effect less obscuring.

We both seem to be thinking of the old ES 3 system when it comes to guilds and great houses and some other things. I agree with what you say. I was talking to another forum member that perhaps the best idea for ES 5 is to combine the good points of ES 3 & 4 that is if the powers that be can come to some kind of agreement about what to use from either game (SIGH) "you can shout but it is no use if they will not listen" It would be nice if they asked this forum and its members what kind of game they would like but they won't....life is not always fair, Lawrence
Iapetus
Y'AI NG'NGAHYOGH-SOTHOTHH'EE-L'GEBF'AI THRODOGUAAAH Alchemy. To really get the most out of your dagger, you need some poison. An arrow does damage, and can even do sneak damage, but only a poisoned arrow can hold your pursuers in place long enough for you to make a clean getaway.Need some extra protection? Shield can be made with various ingredients. In all, Alchemy is a solid skill, no matter what class you roll. AzraelXD
Good thieving gear: Dark Brotherhood Armor/Black Hand Robe: Slick, slick, slick bonuses from both of these items. Even if you don't go through the whole DB, just getting in will net you the DB armor. Skeleton Key: This here is a no-brainer. +40 to security and an unbreakable lockpick. (item) of Nighteye: Some of the areas you go into in the game are so dark. Much better than a torch or Light spells due to the fact that it doesn't give away your position. (item) of Detect Life (anything > 60): Because it's nice to see someone coming when you're trying to loot their house/cave/store/room/castle/etc. A Bow with Weakness to Poison X% for X seconds: Because poisons are one of the most useful tools in the game. Even if the enemy spots you, a good Alchemist poison can drop most creatures before they even reach you. :excl: Warning: Does not work on Argonians and some monsters. Works WONDERS on Ogres, though  Chameleon Items: Once again, a no-brainer. :excl: Be warned though: 100% Chameleon breaks the game. Charm 100 pts for 2-4 second spell (preferably targeted and not touch): To take care of those pesky Imperial/Town Guards who try and cramp your thieving style. Cast and watch your bounties disappear. Invisibility spell: Just in case you need to get out of Dodge in a hurry. (item) of Water Breathing: Being chased? Simply swim off into a large body of water and sit at the bottom. Watch as your pursuers drown themselves. :excl: Warning: Does not work on Argonians, Mud Crabs, or Slaughterfish.
Sypron
Then there's acrobatics. Works well for getting away from any pursuers. I once used to to hop on top of the lava in oblivion. Got very minimal damage on myself, and all of my chasers died.
