Graphical mod overload bug

So as many of you have probably seen, installing too many texture mods will always trigger the infinite loading screen bug and generally make the stability of the game basically zero. The problem is, in my experience, it's caused by the number of mods, not the size.

 

So for example, 15 really tiny texture mods will break the game, and trigger the bug. But 3 absolutely huge texture mods that change dozens of things each, will run fine. This makes no sense to me honestly.

 

Is there a way to remove this seemingly arbitrary limit on texture mods? Or at least know when you've reached this limit?
