CTD during battles

Recommended Posts

I have not been able to really play new vegas in about 7 months because every time I get into battles, i CTD. This is mod related, of course, and seems to stem from the fact that there are plenty of npcs on screen. Its not like I have a massive amount, I have mods like Warzones and IWS. But is not even enough even make me lag, and no I am not running on a monster machine, just a late 2009 imac with bootcamp XP, ATI edition. Maybe it is just the simple fact that the gamebryo engine can't handle it. I have kept looking and adding mods despite my inability to play. I have fallout NV just the way I want it for the most part, and When I do get to battle for a little bit, it really is amazing. But I only mess with fallout related stuff late at night because I just don't have the time play on my pc that much anymore. So I was wondering if anybody could point out a couple things (which I am sure there are many problems with it because it is auto sorted) in my load order. So if you see anything obviously wrong or have any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them. (Patchworks is a merged patch)

Adding more mods is not going to improve it. Instead, try removing mods to find which one or ones are causing the problem. Adding more mods may either add new problems or aggravate existing problems.

When you find yourself in a hole, first, stop digging.

Normally if you have too many NPCs on screen, you get a huge framerate slowdown in combat and not a CTD.

Other suggestions,

Lower your graphics settings way down and see if that improves things.

Check your temperatures to see if something is getting hot.

Try using BOSS to sort load order.

@bben46 Thanks for taking a look. I was already aware that more mods= less stability. I don't really add mods, more so as update or replace. My load order is sorted with BOSS. And when I can I try to take out any mods I don't need. I have found problem mods in the fashion you stated many times, But I think the problem is most likely a important mod, like FOOK, conflicting with a few others. I was wondering if there was any type of workaround , or I anyone saw some mods that obviously conflicted. I run fallout on high (but I tweak some of the advanced options down) settings and I have a few graphics mods, I will see what happens when I lower my graphics. I don't think it will actually have an effect because I don't think it is a massive frame rate drop. I am running smoothly and then an instant ctd, just cuts to a black screen with the little error window in the middle. Edited by twinkinstien 3000

I dare say it's bound to happen with this amount of mods. you should at least use a bashed patch and project nevada, because they already have various built in features, rendering smaller mods in your list obsolete. also, careful with all those stability mods (bugfix compilation, error corrections etc.) - they do more harm than good on some configurations. my suggestion is always, install the most important and the most stable mods first (simply browse the top100 list). after running around and completing some quests (making sure the game runs stable), start adding other stuff, like clothing, weapons, houses, quests, gameplay changing mods, creatures...

the problem you're describing btw. is quite common; it may be EVE causing ctd's, but there is a fix for people with this problem. find it on eve's download page and see if it helps.

How much RAM do you have?

If you have about 3-4 gigs, edit fallout.ini (somewhere in documents I think) and change your current settings to this

uInterior Cell Buffer=32

uExterior Cell Buffer=168

Use ctrl f to find it in your file of course.

Some ini files may not have that at all, so just copy paste into around the top it if that is your case

@mooncarver Thanks, You are probably right. It is a lot of mods. I used to use (and have) project Nevada, But I decided I wad going to stick with FOOK a while back. I know PN is better in many ways as far as a overhaul goes, but I had a lot of problems with it. I saw a lot of performance drop and I would CTD a lot. Arguably I CTD a lot less now. Thats why I have a couple of these little mods to substitute for things in PN I liked. I might switch back seeing as how there have been 2 more versions since I last tried it. And I will see about the stability mods, they may be the problem. also I will look for that EVE fix.

@marharth Thanks, I have 4 gigs RAM, but I am on 32 bit xp, so I can only use 3. I will try your fix and see how it goes.
