Interesting Followers

Have you ever felt like there are too many follower mods with plastic, anime-style, big b00b female NPCs that add nothing to the game? Or maybe you feel like followers should be earned by something more than a simple “Follow me, I need your help”? Perhaps you are simply tired of downloading dozens of new single followers mods only to discard most of them because they don’t fit your playstyle? Or the follower is great and well-made but doesn’t really fit the Skyrim world?

Interesting Followers aims to change that. This mod brings several new, lore-friendly NPCs to the world of Skyrim, each with their own goals, motives, dialogues and possible interactions. The work is inspired by another great mod, Interesting NPCs.

There are 3 categories of followers added:

  • Quest Followers - the core of the mod. There are 7 followers and each one has the quest associated with him which you have to complete in order to gain access to their services. The quests are simple in mind but will fit in the NPCs background.
  • Travellers - these followers are travelling around Skyrim and are available when player reach certain level (usually between 5-15). They don't have any quests on their own but will present interesting backstories and goals.
  • Mercenaries - just like vanilla hirelings, they will be available after paying with gold. Not a whole lot of dialogue but they will have custom voice as well.

Followers will level up alongside the player and can be found at various locations all around Skyrim (to complement stuff like Live Another Life & other random start mods).
Not all of the followers are proficient in combat (though they have necessary skills to survive) but they’re certainly an interesting addition to the player’s endeavours.

Because of the amount of followers, even if you got bored with one, you can try another without switching to different mod.
Followers will blend in the world of Skyrim, giving you the feel that they were always there. That means I am not going to use any fancy editors for designing NPC. If you're looking for anime-style companions, there are thousands of them on Nexus.

Give me some feedback!

Savius Corentus – son of a wealthy merchant from Anvil, this young Imperial doesn’t know much about the world outside of Corentus Manor. Sent by his father on an impossible mission, Savius tries very hard to adjust his new life. Don’t judge his indecisive approach too harsh, as he will learn to handle himself and become valuable ally.

Erlena – you may think of yourself as an adventurer but you’re nowhere near Erlena. This strong Nord woman travelled across Tamriel for most of her life. She knows how to handle herself in difficult situations. While certainly not running away from danger, years of travelling taught her to not jump into every fire on her way. It’s hard to gain trust of this lady but if you do, she has dozens of interesting stories to tell.

Vimis – what would you do if you wanted to join Thieves Guild so badly? Steal of course. But sometimes you steal from the wrong person and you may lose more than you’ve gained. Vimis made some really bad life choices, which made him lose confidence. Despite that, his ambitions are high and he’s yet to surprise the Riften’s Thieves. Why? Because there’s nothing else to lose for this Dunmer.

Sherenlakh – the age does not make you a man. Your deeds do. And Sherenlakh did a lot in his life to earn respect of other orcs. Sometimes it was bloody. Sometimes it was painful. Sometimes he had to lose to win the other day. Sometimes the victory was too bitter to swallow. But he will prevail, at any cost. He may be rough, he may dislike you but he will give you a chance. Chance to prove your worth.

Deriael – you would think that anyone else in his position would lose spirit and give up. But this mysterious Bosmer has few aces up his sleeve. Sometimes he says things that make no sense. Sometimes he may forget who’s the leader. He’s honest, some would say ‘self-centered’. If you expect another silent type to carry your gear, walk away and hire Marcurio, because Deriael has much more to offer than that.

Brelg-haz – making your way up from Underworks Arena to the surface of Vivec is an impossible thing to accomplish, yet this Argonian not only did that but escaped her slave masters as well. She dislikes big, crowded cities, remembering all the pain she had to suffer. Although Brelg-haz is a competent all-round warrior, she acts best with a bow and arrow. You may find it difficult to convince her to leave her hideout, but if you do, she may become a strong ally.

Nelesane – with quite peculiar and interesting view on the world creation and religion, she had hard times adapting to the standards of her home town. To prove her beliefs, she ventured out and visited well-known sacred places around Tamriel. Calm and serene, with healing magic at hand she never lost her way in life. Sometimes you may stop and hear her out, because when she speaks, it's wisdom.

If you don't mind, i would sugest going in a similar way as Follower Rewritten by Anbeegod and Amorous Adventures by FoxFingers (but without the romantic stuff)

and works like Follower commentary overhual / Dynamic follower dialogue, etc. as using vanilla, may sound boring but, can have good potential into improving vanilla followers, as interesthing npcs. already have some. =D

sorry, for my bad english.

I have about 100 vanilla style follower mods installed. I add & remove them on a monthly bases. There are only a few that have become apart of my game.

Two follower mods that will never be removed from my game are Followers & Companions by Scrabbulor & The Ningheim Followers by Seran4xx. The authors of these mods gave them routines. I see at least one of them every time I play. They sometimes come to my aid in combat & sometimes I save them. If I use them as followers they go back to their routine when finished.

I also use a mod called Follower Go On Trip. This mod puts up to 24 followers out into the world & do quests. This mod is not perfect but it shows some of the things vanilla followers are capable of.

I use a mod called Death Alternative. I is kind of the ultimate follower mod even though it has no followers in it. What it does is add "Hope" to the game. Instead of dying, your character goes into bleed-out. In that state your followers can save you unless they are defeated them selves. I mention this mod because it allowed some of my characters to become "healer only" & have the followers do all the fighting. It would be great to have a mod that asked the character to keep a band of adventures healthy through a quest.

A follower with their own routine, that randomly asks you to join them in completing radiant quests would be nice. Anything but sticking them in a already crowded inn would be nice as well.

That's a nice idea, since vanilla followers are kinda meh (maybe besides one or two).
I would like to start with my own followers because
a) it's relatively easy to mod
b) it'll help me with understanding the scripting better.

I could add more dialogue options or even quests to them, also alter the cost of hired followers. That's an interesting approach for the future of this project.

The general plan is to start with something simple - few followers with their own quests. When this is done, I have an idea of adding more simple followers without quests but with interesting backgrounds and routines, so the Skyrim would be more populated. I just want variety - one follower mod, with stuff for everyone.

Updated: The very first screenshots are here. The look may change a little bit but I'm satisfied with this. Two more followers planned for inital release (total of 7), but they're more tricky to place in the world. Followers descriptions coming soon!

perhaps the only character who does not convince me much yet, is elana. do not see my comment as a request, but as my personal feelings, and maybe, if you like, as a suggestion.
Elana, while well worked and unique, stills reminds all the Female followers who use weapons of one or both hands as warriors, adventure or hunting type. uthgerd, Aela, Mjoll, Lydia, Iona, Frea, Eola and so on only in vanilla. felling like "another one" so, by looking at your current project, it came to my mind a vision, if she was a bandit, or better, an ex bandit, she is loved by simpliest people, near poor livages, but hated in big cities, in some, the jarl want her cut in a jail.

Elana, likes to look as a good woman, but she hates rich and arrogant people, is not the type who talk much. (or something alongside these lines) she is not good because she is a criminal killer, but rather, she was one, and know everything, their motivations, and how are their lives, understand them, and know enough about dirt rival gangs in the land. If you know mangas such as beserk, and Slayers, (in this imagine a fusion bettewen Reina, Naga and Caska) would make her truly unique.

Actually, giving her a bit of a "dark side" is great idea :D generally, this is the NPC that is prior to change in terms of character, as I made no progress yet on her quest & backstory. She could be somehow associated with DB, perhaps as a former recruit who resigned? That could explain where she learned fighting skills. Thanks for the suggestions!

Had an ideia for a new follower, although i feel there is already to many female followers to the game, i think, there is one that macth like a pluzze piece inside the game lore, one thing, that have always felt that there should be, is a Female Khajiit follower, or to marry, all in all, most mods end up being to aestheticall, or are bland.

There are a fewer Khajjits outside of caravans in the history, and then, it came up an ideia that give meaning to it, without making anything really complex.

The forggoten history of the lost 4 Khajiit Caravan

In the vanilla game, there are some Khajiit at some specific locations around the world, either dead or in some ambiguous instance. All this happened due to the thalmor, Ambition, betrayal, revenge, suffering and a never ending wound of the only menber who tried pathetically to recover what was left of her "family". the disgusting creature that dares to rarely prowl during the day, and sexually harasses the miners at markarth hoping to feel a little pleasure again. has forgotten her memories after a tragic advent in the past.

Ko'dhara is a female Khajiit, the lost sister of Shavari, and the only member of the 4° Caravan who did not submit itself to the thalmor.

She is usually at Markhat, Riverside, crouched, admiring the workers energy at work at 8 to 12, and pass the rest of the day deeply hidden at the Warrens to consume moon sugar, and any sort of thing to satisfy it's uncontrollable addiction. Pretty much like Shavari, she is highly anthipatic, disgusting, and has a generally hostile temperament to anyone, from time to time, she shows to be bipolar, and deep down has a kind side that ries to hide. she is poor and carry nothing but a piece of Ragged Trousers, arm bandages, and only one 1 iron dagger. despite that, she knows enough to handle herself in combat, prepare has knowedge to make potent poisons, and have the ability to conjure a bound bow in case of emergency. She is good as a archer, and know how to hidde herself very well. as for a ideia for description, she is , marriable, weight 80 and look like.:

As for quests ideia, i have a few that i can show later if you like and hive enough time  , that it's not hard at all (as most goals in this ideia, would revolve around the dead khajiit) and would not require customs npcs to do it.
