xmarker and explosion issue

I am currently trying to activate an explosion effect using an xmarker. The syntax is: xmarker.placeatme effect

This is in the quest script. I have placed a tag message to show me when I play the game that the script has executed past this code. The thing is nothing happens. Do I place the xmarker exactly where I want the effect to be? I have tried several different approaches in placing the xmarker and nothing seems to work. Hopefully someone can give me some insight.
