IslandGirl
I built a solid wall around Sanctuary and noticed that half the time, Preston and Co. (as well as Codsworth) are on the other side! The walls are snapped together and all that jazz, but the settlers still manage to go through them. Is there a way to prevent this or some sort of mod that fixes this? I'm guessing it's designed this way but I figure it can't hurt to ask. Thanks all. :)

IlDragoRuggente2
All of the living creatures in FO4 will teleport themselves through a wall if they want to get passed it, I have had locked rooms/buildings in several settlements since I wanted to have privateareas but it didn't work since the settlers teleported themselves into the room/buildings. I would assume that it is a part of the NPC path finding mechanism so I don't know if there is a fix/mod for it. zanity
Navigation does NOT work how you think. NPCs only use pathing functions when the game thinks you are watching them. Out-of-sight, and they use PLAUSIBLE SPAWING algorithms based of navmesh data and locality. Clearly, 'outside' your walls is a PLAUSIBLE location for the settlers to be, so the game will keep placing them there. The ONLY way to prevent this would be to modify the settlement spawing and scripting rules- for instance limiting the 'definition' of the settlement area to the outer walls you build. I don't think that would be easy. Settlers are MEANT to roam- have you never seen them rush off to confront some nearby enemy? This is a fundamental game mechanism that walling them in conflicts with. FO4 uses a VERY weak ancient, primitive engine and does NOTHING in a modern vein. SIMULATION is not part of the game design philosophy (unlike a modern game like GTAV or Watchdogs). Trying to play 'the sims' is trying to put 'simulation' into a game that has none. In GTAV you can viably follow an NPC across the game world. The engine behind FO4 just doesn't have this capabiliy. Followers use all kinds of coding cheats, for instance, simply to APPEAR to keep up with you in the game. Your best off-the-shelf hope would be a well coded NEW settlement mod with the functionality you like baked in by the modder. Lots of peeps want what you want, so if it is possible, expect new mods to offer this.
