I have a 40 inch trinitron HD flat screen tv I got a few years ago for very little -- and have been contemplating using it for my computer monitor... I have a ati 4890 1g ddr5 and another that I could add for sli/crossfire -- has anyone used something similar or have any ideas whether this is worth trying to do... I currently just have a 19 in flat panel -- flatiron 4ms 1400:1 contrast...

It can work great depending on your needs. Keep in mind most HDTVs are running either 720p or 1080p, both of which are non-standard resolutions for older games. If you play many games that came out before 2008 or so, you may have issues where games will only take up a small portion of your screen. There are often widescreen patches or modifications available to make older games playable in HD resolutions.

If your TV is 720p, this is going to result in relatively low-resolution gameplay compared to what you might be used to (1280x720 is similar to the relatively low 4:3 resolution of 1024x768). So, keep that in mind.

In addition, gaming on a large screen can be awesome, but you may need to invest in a wireless mouse/keyboard if you don't have these already. I'm guessing you won't want to sit terribly close to such a large screen. Finding a top notch wireless gaming mouse can run up the cost a bit too.

That said, I used my TV as a monitor for a number of years and it works great so long as you know how to work around the few potential drawbacks.
