Recommend a Card

I don't think there's any need for anything above a GTX 460 or a HD 6850, however, a MSI HD 6950 2GB Twin Frozr (a totally lovely aftermarket cooler setup) for $230 after MIR is a danged good deal my friend:

Agreed, strongly. The super-high-end cards offer a negligible performance increase per dollar spent; don't let someone sell you on one unless your brother wants to run super-ridiculous resolutions or dual monitors. I'm rocking the HD 6850, which falls behind a few of the top-end cards but goes for dirt cheap in comparison; you could almost get two for the price of a single GTX 570 or HD 6970. According to the specs, a 6850 or 460, like yours, would be "beefier" then what Bethesda recommends, so I'd say that's the most cost-effective route:

Man, that 6950 deal is tempting, though...

Depends on the quality settings you use - things like AF and AA really chew up GPU time, memory and system bandwidth. The higher the GPU,shader and Vram clock speeds, the greater the number of shaders the card has and the more Vram the card has available the better the chance is it will be able to run things smoothly when it is stressed - instead of turning things into chunky-custard.

though having said that, I agree with the majority of posters on here that a GTX560Ti should fit the bill - though at present I am using a MSI GTX580 O/C with a custom water cooling block.

Not tryin to start a gpu war but it's been said a few times before that ATI's seem to have fewer issues with bethesda titles. They all seemed to own Oblivion and FO3. I would suggest the HD 5870, any drawbacks compared to any of the 6000 series are minuscule to nonexistent.

The 5870 even out performs the 6870 and 6950 in AF and AA. You'll more than likely be able to max out skyrim at 1920res with this card, you can nab one of these off amazon for under a hundred bucks!

or just ignore all of that and flip through this site: http://www.hwcompare.com/6242/radeon-hd-5870-vs-radeon-hd-6950-2gb/

I think that was true for cards from 4 years ago or more, not so much now. I've certainly never had any problems using my GTX 470 with Bethsoft games.

I don't know much about graphics cards, but i recently got a Asus G73swA1 with a GTX 460m, but according to battlefield Im under reccomended requirements, so I was kinda worried about Skyrim, does anyone know how my computer should fair? It runs New Vegas on high, but id like it to still be better than my 360 version lol, thanks.

Your laptop easily slaughters the 360 in terms of graphics capability. Skyrim has pretty low required specs in general, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I personally just upgraded from a GTX 275 to my new GTX 560Ti and I love it. This thing is SOOOO quiet and stays around 55 degrees at full load with the stock cooler. My 275 was loud and ran about 70 degrees at full load. These 500 series Ferni cards are amazingly cool and quiet.

Just my 2 cents but I would highly recommend the 560Ti for your brother. I picked up mine for $200 (after rebate) on newegg a few weeks ago. The GTX 580 is obviously a little faster but for double the price ($400 - $500) it's not worth the money for diminishing returns. Use that extra $200 for other upgrades.
