Vaporware DRM - Developer discussion

Recommended Posts

I had a nice, elegant post with a bunch of quotes but then I managed to somehow get the forum to destroy it when trying to preview it. Hm. Anyway:

@Jeoshua:

Thanks for the clarification. I think I found the wording in the "Central Module" section confusing. Given most modders aren't going to be experienced developers I would suggest just outright telling them what solution to use for their digital signature. I know you suggest GPG in the "Extra Modules" section but I don't really see the harm in just outright telling people to use it unless they know what they're doing. This might also help adoption as people might assume the process of generating a signature is significantly more difficult and involved than it really is.

That said, I think people are concerned about this being trivial to remove because of the name, honestly. The word DRM in common usage tends to mean something that restricts usage and I'm guessing people are jumping to conclusions (I did too until I read the outline). I'm guessing a lot of people aren't reading the full outline or might be having a knee jerk reaction to the name. I would suggest making it as clear as possible in your post before the outline of the system itself that you try to get across that this is primarily a method of protecting authorship and attribution, not preventing distribution and usage. I guess it does suggest it as an optional module (the "triple word score" thing), but the core of it is still focused around authorship.

I'm not trying to disrespect your request to keep the discussion technical but I kind of feel obligated to say: I feel like this is overkill. Then again I'm not someone who's getting their content stolen so I have limited room to speak. But I do think it deserves to at least be judged along the lines of what it actually is as opposed to based on the name alone.

@EmissaryOfWind:

It makes me think of Duke Nukem personally.
