Maybe create a material swap, edit the vanilla weapon (or copy the record), add mod keywords and make an object mod to apply the material swap. To make the weapon stand alone you just copy the original record. Open it in CK and change the editor id then close. It will ask if you want to create a new form, say yet. Then you have a copy. You could then add the mod association and attach point keywords to your copy instead of modifying the vanilla weapon.
