Combining Meshes from Vanilla Assets

I'm trying to create a unique version of the Marine Combat Armor that is more than a re-texture. I'm trying to start small, seeing as small problems are the easiest to help with and I will hopefully build on that knowledge to create a full set of "unique" armor.

 

So here we go:

 

Currently I'm attempting to combine the Trapper Hunter Hood with the Marine Helmet then fill in the open neck skin with another asset like the Marine Tactical Helmet. I've extracted all of the .nif files with BAE to a separate folder on my desktop and can open each individually in NifSkope, but I have no idea what I'm doing. If anyone has any leads or direction to start it would be very helpful.

 

Simplified: I need to know how to make a model larger and how to combine two models.

 

Edit: Never mind, i think I've discovered that there are no other options than using Maya.
