What di you think of the lord of the rings

My friends all think I'm crazy because I say the books are too short and better than the movie.

WHAT!!! The books are TOO SHORT? Tell me that was a typo.

Excuse me, i don't know what came over me. The book is excellent, and was recently voted by the British public to be the best book they (collectively) had ever read. The films do, in my opinion, are very good representations of the book, but their drawbacks were that they were films. Their aim was to introduce a fantasy world and tell a story within it, whereas the books were already in an established world and was part of an everchanging dream that Tolkien (if thats bad sp i'm so sorry) had for Middle Earth, and there was so much back-story in the LOTR that just wasn't relevant to the films.

Rumour: Finally confirmed (just about) by Sir Ian McKellen on a Brit interview show, the rights for The Hobbit are being discussed by New Line Cinema and the Tolkien estate, and Peter Jackson will (if they make the film) be asked to make it. Hows that for interesting news, eh?

The rings saga?

One of the greatest works of modern Western literature.

The effect on society today cannot be understated.

In a time when people need fantasy to escape the dire world around us,

Jackson has given the 21st century new hero archetypes taken from the oldest sources.

Here's a little story that shows that LOTR has taken it's place in the mindset.

I was heading to my friends house (who is also a big fan of the movie/books)

and as I was heading along to his apartment block,

a gang of about 8 kids all came running out with funny plastic swords and shields,

as they all hurried past, one cried to his buddy, "You can be Legolas, but I want to be Aragron!"

This took me back to when myself and my mates used to play 'soldiers' as kids,

we, being from a town in the UK that was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe,

Always liked the war tales our veteran grandads used to tell us...

But now in the 21st century, kids have new heros, these superb archetypes from the LOTR franchise.

Instead of the evil nazis that me and my mates used to pretend to fight, it is now the vile orcs!

These are classic hero and villain fodder, and I am glad it has inspired people.

And by goodness, do we need heroes nowadays, the real world has a short supply.

I consider Morrowind as also part of the great rebirth of fantasy in the last few years.

And if it make millions of people pick up a book or think, I cannot complain.

Even my normally cynical father is secretly reading LOTR!

And that is something!

Hey same here Jormundgand! I am 11 and last year I read them twice. This year I have read it once and am currently half way through The Fellowship. I have also decided (under the infulence of an interview I saw of Ian Mckellen who does the same) to read it once every year. The thing is, it keeps getting better and better! Because I read other middle earth background knowledge books and stuff so each time you read it you know more and more! I am so addicted to it, I can't read anything but Tolkien! I am afraid that no author will compare. My teacher and parents are trying to convince me, by recommending these small, and pitiful -so called fantasy stories-.... :nazgul:

Oh and not to hijack this thread or anything but, I was really dissapointed in the movies. As said earlier they could not compare to the Lord of the Rings Books, the greates tale of our time.

uh you mean "The Books not the Movies"

...thought i'd be all stupid and gramatical there... :bleh:

Well, you are a relative newby so I won't delete the post but this is spam!

Firstly, we accept that not everyone on this forum has English as a mother tongue and make allowances. :D

Second, the post is perfectly understandable. :D

Third, as LOTR is frequently issued as a compendium and the films must be viewed as a trilogy they can be reasonably referred to in the singular. :D

Fourth, if you try to be picky about someone else's grammar, get your own right! It's grammatical! <_<

Okay?
