Maps keep disappearing

My main and local maps keep disappearing. Complete reinstall fixes it, but I don't want to do that again. I have a bunch of mods, and my game is way more stable than ever. I haven't changed anything since I started using this load order:

Like I said, everything was working fine. Just my map will disappear. It doesn't happen in-game, so to speak. It happens after a CTD. Not every CTD (I get about one every 1-2 hours now). The only OBSE plugins I use now are Elys Silent Voice and Fast Exit. I use Cyrodiil Texture Map with Elven Map icons, and reinstalling those textures doesn't help. I use DarkUI and reinstalling it doesn't help. I tried the console command "reload mapmenu" and it doesn't help. I have my POIs turned off in Wryebash, but I don't think that's the issue - that only affects the compass, right? I even tried using a backup Oblivion.ini that I made after my last install. No joy. Are my Oblivion main files getting corrupted on the CTD? What am I missing?

Are you running Windows Vista or 7 and is Oblivion installed in the default (C:\Program Files Location)? If so, Windows UAC is a possible culprit.

Are those textures getting deleted from your /Data/ directory or do they just stop working? It's a longshot as texture replacer issues typically result in immediate problems but are you using BSA Redirection as your form of Archive Invalidatione? This can be set up through OBMM, Wrye Bash, or Archive Invalidation Invalidated!, they all use the same method.

World maps disappearing can come from texture replacers. I see that you are using a mod that edits the user interface. Try reinstalling that one or getting rid of it.

 

When you have a problem of this nature and reinstall Oblivion to try to fix it, be sure that you delete all the meshes and textures and things and reinstall all your mods correctly one by one. Just reinstalling Oblivion won't change anything because the bad mods will continue to mess things up after the fresh reinstall.

 

The most likely suspects in your situation are the mods that edit the user interface, map, and map icons. Try removing them and every single texture installed by them. Then when you get your game working, reinstall the mods one by one with a play-test in between each one until you break your game again. Noting the point at which you break the game again will be very instructive.

Relative mod newbie here - couldn't he just disable the given mods through Data Files on the initial splash to test? Or is the naivete showing?

Alright, but I really love DarkUI, as I, like the mod creator, have issues with bright screens causing headaches. I've played over 60 hours on this recent install before this problem came up again. On my last reinstall, I uninstalled Oblivion, all mods loaded through OBMM, and then deleted my Oblivion folders altogether (including every one of my saves - got tired of my game freaking out on me no matter what mods I was using and just started from scratch). Then I did a full defrag. So I had a clean, fresh start - or so I thought. After reading Bben's Reinstall Procedure, my next reinstall will cover the registry entries. (AND I will make a backup of my vanilla Oblivion files, which I wish I had done right about now!)

 

@gahnzz - the DarkUI is not an esp. It loads files into the Data subfolders (textures, menus, etc), and Oblivion automatically uses them when it loads up. I'll have to delete every one of those files to get it out of my game.

 

<sigh>

 

I have been using DarkUI since July, and this map disappearing problem has only come up in the last couple of weeks. Reinstalling it didn't work, so I'll take it out and see what happens.

@ gahnzz

If a mod adds replacer textures, which overwrite the original textures then the change will never go away until you go into your texture folders and delete, move, or rename the offending textures so that the computer can't find them. If a replacer mod is .esp-dependent, then it adds additional textures and does not overwrite the vanilla Oblivion ones. You can make those changes go away by simply deactivating the mod.

 

If you can get your maps back, then chances are that you can install Dark UI again. You will just want to be careful to see if anything goes wrong again when you install it. Dark UI is a popular mod, so I would not expect it to be buggy, and if there are known mod conflicts, they might be documented in the readme file or at the download point.

Update: Well, I got it working again without having to uninstall anything. A little background - I was having major CTD and FPS problems with FCOM, so after too many reinstalls, I organized all my other mods into separate folders, extracted them to their own Data folder (outside the Oblivion directory) so that when I was done installing FCOM, I could just copy that Data folder into Oblivion without having to reinstall each mod separately. Well, I have since ditched FCOM and OOO, but I still use my little system to help my reinstalls go faster (and for backups!). I just recopied the meshes, textures, and menus folders from my backup into the Oblivion directory, and everything works.

 

I know that this doesn't pinpoint the problem, but I think you were right that DarkUI was causing it. After reading hundreds of comments in the DarkUI threads on PES and TESNexus, I have seen that a handful of others have had this same issue with DarkUI. I just don't know why it started after so many hours of gameplay. I've read that CTD's can cause file corruption - but would it corrupt the xmls? (My CTD's, though, seem to be caused entirely by cell change - I have never had a CTD when trying to look at any menu.) It's just a philosophical question for now - until it happens again!

 

I'm still confused, but for right now, I just want to play!
