Opposing Factions

Hi everyone!

Could you help me with/point me to a list of which factions are mutually exclusive?

In other words - if I join faction X, which factions Y will not accept me anymore?

I have only started playing the game, joined the Blades (is that necessary for the main quest - if was kinda cool in any way). Been thinking of joining the Imperial Legion, but won't that 'cramp my style' with other factions?

Also, which factions are best in your opinion - but my main question remains the matter of mutually exlclusive ones.

Thanks!

as far as actual quests go the only conflict is with the theives guild/fighter guild, notably solitudes code book, and the killing of the head of the fighters guild, its entirly posible to be head of the theives guild and fighters guild but you have to be carefull with some of the quests, and do some planning.

All three Great Houses are essentially in a state of martial dispute. There are quests to outright kill House members. The Thieves' Guild is in opposition to the Camonna Tong. The Fighter's Guild is backed by the Tong and is therefore an opponent as well. The Ashlanders, becasue of their heretic beliefs in the eyes of the Temple, are enemies to the Temple.

As has been said there are minor conflicts between factions but none that stop you rising to the top in all if you wish to. Join the thieves' guild before doing the Balmora fighters guild quest 4 (Sotthilde's Codebook). The final thieves' guild quests duplicate the last Morag Tong writ and the final fighters' guild quest respectively. If you wait until you have these quests from both parties there is no problem. There is also a duplication between the Imperial Cult Quest 'Scroll of Fiercely Roasting' and a Morag Tong 'special duties' quest both involving Caracalmo. Again, you can get both sets of instructions before carrying out the quest.

In general don't go around killing in the ancestral tombs and caves until you have completed main and factions quests. Although none of them (IIRC) prevent you from achieving your goals they can prevent you doing certain quests. I'll give two examples - closing down the Caldera Mine by accident causes problems with House Redoran. Completing the fighters' guild quest to find Rels Tenim can lead you to killing the vampire Marara thus removing one of the vampiric quests. Even more important is that if you wish to do the 10/11 vampiric quests you might accidentally have wiped out your clan headquarters!

The game was designed to prevent you playing as more than one Great House. You can do it with a mod. Also there is a glitch that enables you to play Hlaalu after starting as Redoran or Telvanni.

Here also are two other points that help when planning what you do. If you wish to complete the threads of the webspinner, do it before you become Grandmaster of the Morag Tong (otherwise you have no one from whom to get your reward). Similarly don't become Master Thief if you have Bal Molagmar quests outstanding for Gentleman Jim Stacey.

I hope this will help you develop your strategy a little.

If you're actually into staying away from factions that don't like eachother, instead of just not being able to rise to the top, here is the list that I know.

  • All great houses against each other

    Telvanni Vs. Mages Guild

    Thieves Guild Vs. Fighters Guild

    Thieves Guild Vs. Cammona Tong

    Morag Tong Vs. Cammona Tong

    Morag Tong Vs. Dark Brotherhood

    Temple Vs. Imperial Cult

    Telvanni Vs. Temple

Thats all I can think of, but I'm sure there is some I forgot.

The only restriction on factions you have in the game is that you can only join one of the three great houses. Apart from that, anything goes.

You can get any set of factions to work, if you are careful. The main thing is to avoid getting SEEN if you have to kill anyone in a faction you are a member of, or steal from a faction you are a member of. The safest approach is to opt for the dialogue solution to any quest that gives you that option, which many do (i.e. talking instead of fighting).

The relations between the different factions are somewhat complex, but you really only have to be aware of the main ones:

- The three Great Houses dislike each other (but you can only join one anyway)

- House Telvanni and the Mages Guild hate each other

- The Temple dislikes the Mages Guild and, even more so, House Telvanni

- The Fighter's Guild hates the Thieves Guild. IMO, this is the only one that you have to be really careful with.

It is very easy to justify being a member of conflicting factions from a roleplaying point of view because the disputes are very petty.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, here are the "most chummy" factions:

- Imperial Legion, Imperial Cult, Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, House Hlaalu (this is the largest set of "safe" factions I can think of - very good for beginners)

- Imperial Legion, Fighter's Guild and House Redoran

- House Redoran and The Temple

The Morag Tong is the only faction that is totally neutral, i.e. no-one likes them and no-one dislikes them. It is the one safe bet for any character.
