xaliqen
if you are free to be critical of Bethesda's work then master cartographer, impress us with your wares.. You know, I appreciate Bethesda as much as just about anyone. I play their games for hundreds of hours on average and enjoy their support for the modding community and their genuine interest in what fans have to say. That said, I don't really understand the attitude of, if you can't do something yourself, then you're not allowed to have an opinion about it. I appreciate this map and enjoy the care that went into it, but that doesn't mean others can't compare it to ancient or pre-modern map-making and cartography if they want to. If someone paints my house, I'm allowed to have an opinion of the job they do, even if it's not my profession. I try to shape my opinions around what I feel is an informed response, but, hey, we all have personal taste which helps determine our likes and dislikes. If people are unhappy receiving a paper map when they expected cloth and believe it's more simplified than their ideal map, so be it. In any event, there will be plenty of opportunities to mod the in-game map, and I'm pretty sure we can all appreciate that.
Sheralynn
if you are free to be critical of Bethesda's work then master cartographer, impress us with your wares.. I'm not saying it to be negative. I think it's an objective observation that the map is very plain. Just type "cartography map" in google images to compare. And if it was meant as a crude (primitive) map why then put a very sharp compass on it?? Thats a dissonance. Everything re Skyrim is high quality and very polished, this map sticks out. Odd and maybe an oversight. I think they could have made something much much better. Plenty of artists and illustrators around, wouldn't even register budget wise. Personally I don't really care and probably never even going to use the thing. Just think it's a missed opportunity. runforitkyle
How can we be so sure though? 11/11/11 hasn't even come yet, how can we really know what the preorder map is? It sounds like we're just talking about the one that's folded up and placed inside the case. Agreed. Sorry guys that its the preorder map. =(

I never suggested that no-one had a right to complain, but if people keep their expectations to modest levels then perhaps they wouldn't have to complain. The map provided with oblivion is certainly worse than this, and I can say that because I know graphic design, but also being a photographer I have a decent knowledge about offset printing and paper manufacturing techniques. I wouldn't expect Bethesda to suddenly leap ahead with a full cloth map. Textile printing isn't easy, especially from a QC standpoint. I expect them to take steps to improve upon what they have done before I am not expecting a night>day difference.
